Woods 50054 WiFi 40 amp 120-240V ContactorGE Zwave 40 amp 120-240V ContactorWi-fi and zwave are different automation protocols. Z-WaveŽ Sigma Designs.Wi-fi uses proprietary app on phone or computer program that may or may not be current over time. Wifi products from different company might not interoperate. Wifi bandwidth allows quick transmission of data, with more broadcast distance and maybe wider functionality than zwave, but might carry privacy issues. Zwave works with phone or other device via in-home hub. Open-source zwave has been standard for decades. Zwave devices from any company will interoperate with each other, with newer products offering additional features, such as automatic inclusion and frequently-listening. Zwave data packets are small, broadcast distance can be dependent on array of devices. Zwave offers controlled privacy. Both wifi and zwave are reliable, offer scheduled events, both can be used while away home, and both will signal when connection is successful. Timer on wall controls water heater24 hour timer to control my water heater.Timer is mounted in-wall below attic light switch. Timer is same size as typical light switch When Hot water is scheduled using timer, hot water consumption drops. Reducing consumption is key to saving money and saving energy. Resources: See installation Eye-level installation: easy to change schedule, and reset after power outage Resources: See Family Chart for setting timer Off peak water heater options |
Programmable
timers are commonly used for lights, fans, motors etc. Wide variety of voltages, can be adapted to control high amp loads such as water heater etc. Resources: Programmable timers Compare ways to control high-amp load 24 volt programmable timer Din rail mount |

Countdown
timers
are commonly used for bathroom light, fan and heaters, and ventilation
fans and automatically turn off load after length of time. Can be adapted to control high amp loads. Resources: Countdown timers Compare ways to control high-amp load Off delay On delay |

Delay timers
are used for common circuits including HVAC, pumps, motors,
flashing-flickering lights. The purpose is to turn off or turn on a
device after a period of time. Resources: Off delay On delay Twin & one shot timer Delay timer for motor How to wire contactor block Tork industrial delay timers |

Thermostats
measure temperature on gas, electric, solar heaters, and turn on-off
gas or electric circuit. Resources: Gas thermostats Electric water heater thermostats |
Aquastat
responds to water temperature, and usually switches electrical device. Thermal switch responds to heat and usually switches electrical device. Freeze control turns on electric circuit before air or water temperature reaches freezing. Thermostatic mixing valve automatically regulates hot water temperature on water heater Resources: Aquastats Thermal switch Freeze control Mixing valve Add another thermostat to gas or electric heater |

Electrical Safety:
Each item works with the other to provide overall protection of grid and service. |
Fuse and breaker
cut power when heat on wire exceeds rating. GFCI cuts power when a short to ground is detected. Arc fault cuts power with an arcing connection or short to ground. Ground provides direct pathway for electricity to reach soil or ground. Surge and arrestor protect from voltage increases caused by inductive loads and nearby lightning. Resources: How to wire GFCI and arc fault How to wire surge protection: single and 3-phase Why you need ground wire Fuseholder Subpanels |
