How to replace TP valve

Read about TP valve code

TP valve

Raise TP lever
Raise TP lever for 5 seconds.
Feet away from discharge tube!
TP valve leaking water
Use masonite to check if TP valve is releasing water.

Install expansion tank on incoming cold water line to help with constantly drizzling TP when tank temperature must be kept high.

Pressure reducing valve
Install pressure reducing valve when TP fails frequently or when pressure is greater than 80psi. High pressure can damage tank.
Does TP valve need to be replaced?
         Is it leaking?
If TP valve is dripping or releasing water out of discharge tube, do not cap off TP valve or discharge tube. Do not plug or obstruct TP valve or discharge tube.
Obstructing and/or capping off TP valve can lead to explosion of water heater tank.

TP valve releases water when tank is overheating, pressure is high -or- when TP valve has gone bad.
When TP valve is releasing water, the water drizzles out of ovverflow tube and/or periodically bursts out of overflow and creates puddle at bottom of heater.

Another cause of TP leak can be closed pressure system caused by check valve on water line. What to look for: Tank has frequent TP valve failures. Actions: Remove check valve or Install pressure reducing valve.

What to look and listen for: Water heater should be dry at all times. Look for water around base of water heater, and listen for perodic sound of scalding water being released. Some TP valves drain directly into drain pipe so listen for sounds of escaping water. If TP valve is continuously running water, tank can have less hot water, you run out of hot water quickly and cost to operate water heater increases.

       What to do:
Raise lever on TP valve for 5 seconds and lower back down. This will dislodge anything stuck in the valve.
Avoid scalding: Stay away from water release area.
Water releases from TP valve 6 times stronger than water hose and will spray scalding water

If TP valve still not functioning after raising and lowering the lever, next step is replace TP valve.

Steps: how to replace TP valve,
1) turn off power to heater and let water cool for several hours.
Electric heater: turn OFF circuit breaker
Typical Gas heater: rotate knob to vacation setting, or move knob to pilot position
Make sure tank has cooled before removing TP valve

2) Buy TP valve from hardware store >> look at marking on old valve

3) Turn off water.
4) Open Bathtub spout on hot side to let air into tank.
5) Open TP valve to lower water level.
Or use drain valve on bottom of tank
        If water heater won't drain

6) Unscrew TP valve counterclockwise using 12-14" pipe wrench.
7) Install new valve and make sure threads have white teflon tape.
Teflon tape will seal threads against leak.

8) Connect overflow tube that was attached to old TP valve.
9) Refill tank with water.
Do not turn heater ON until tank is full of water.
Wait for water to come out of bathtub spout in full stream before turning on water heater.
When bathtub spout is running, then open new TP valve for a moment to let last bit of air out of tank.

10) Tank is full. Turn off bathtub spout. Open TP lever for a moment to release trapped air.
11) Turn on water heater.
       Electric: turn on circuit breaker
Gas: Rotate knob to previous temperature setting
.               How to adjust temperature on water heater
Do not turn water heater ON unless tank is full of water or it can damage tank.
Add insulation to TP valve to prevent heat loss.

Do not cover TP lever with insulation
