Adjust thermostat on hot water heater

Lower the thermostat on hot water heater <> save 3-5% operating cost for each 10° lower
Typical bath shower is 105°F
Setting thermostat to 120°F helps prevent thermal expansion, and shortened life or tank and plumbing from high pressure. Resource: Thermal expansion
More chemicals are percolated out of water at high temperatures.
Water stored at 140°F in the tank may accumulate 19 lbs. of lime per year.
160°F in the tank may accumulate 85 lbs. of lime per year.
180°F in the tank may accumulate 135 lbs. of lime per year.
More gasses are separated as water temperatures rise. Air in water line

Calibration: all mechanical thermostats are calibrated approximately.
Actual shut off temperature can vary by +10°F or -10°F
The temperature in lower part of tank can drop by 15-25° before turn on, but upper part of tank will still be hot.
Tank should deliver 70% of tank volume before usable (105°) water runs out.
For more precise control of temperature on electric heater, use PID: Resource: add another thermostat to water heater

1) Make sure thermostats are covered with insulation, protector, and cover. See image
Without insulation, Thermostat exposed to room temperature will misread temperature and cause overheating.
2) Make sure thermostat sits flat against tank wall. Wiggle thermostat. Check that bracket is not rusted and loose.

Do not turn off gas unless smell of gas is present

Cautions: Use adequate lighting. No candles, open flame or smoking. Inspect for leak, rust, soot, missing parts. If you smell gas, leave building, and call gas company. Thermostat probe or sensor is immersed in water inside tank.
Water temperature around the thermostat probe can drop 15-25° before main burner is activated.

Thermostat probe is same-similar for all types of gas water heater control valves.

The temperature sensor (copper tube) contains two things: "the ECO (energy cut off), and a temperature probe thermistor.
Thermistors are thermally (heat) sensitive variable resistors. A change in water temperature changes the resistance (measured in ohms) of the thermistor. The gas Gas control valve thermostatcontrol valve interprets change in resistance as a change in temperature and uses information to activate and deactivate call for heat."

ECO (energy cut off) will trip if water inside residential tank exceeds 180-188°F high limit. This will cause thermostat to shut off gas to burner.

ECO is typically single-use and gas control must be replaced. The new electronic gas control, such as Intellivent control valve used on some power vent models, and the Honeywell electronic gas control valves are resettable after overheat event. Models vary, and reset is not possible for every condition.

Calibrate Gas control valve:
Calibration on Gas valve is approximate by 5-8°F.
If calibration is far off, then rotate dial so temp at faucet is good.

If temperatures fluctuate, then plumbing is first suspect. Check temperature of water at TP valve and at water heater drain valve. Check for stacking or crossover

If plumbing checks out, gas control might be bad.
If temperatures inside tank drop too low before water heater turns ON, then gas valve is bad.
