Fire
safety resource: Do not use stranded wire. Stranded wire will come loose and cause arcing. Do NOT solder end of stranded wire to make solid ... amperage will melt solder. Connect stranded wire to short jumper of solid copper wire and cover with twist on connector. Use only solid copper wire. Do not use aluminum wire. Maximum 2 wires under same screw plate. Do not use 2 different gauge wires under same screw plate. For more wires, or differen gauge wires, attach with wire nut and connect jumper wire to screw plate. Tighten screws very tight against copper wire. Keep Door to enclosure closed at all times. Turn off power before working on wires. |

toggle voltages OFF peak Wire DTU40 timer to toggle water heater between 120Volt and 240Volt. Use this technique for peak electric prices. When prices are peak, set water heater to opeate at 120 volts for slower heating. Tank stays hot, but hot water does not recover quickly. When peak price ends, resume 240Volt operation for faster heat recovery inside tank. Wiring inside water heater is not changed Elements and thermostas will work wirh 120 or 240 This will not work for Whirlpool energy smart water heater Resource: Off-peak water heater options |

Change water heater temperature
using DTU40 timer Applies to Intermatic WHQ timer and GM40 timer and GE 15207 series timers and Intermatic T106 timer 240 Volt Use timer for two different temperatures on electric water heater. Either upper thermostat and element have power or lower themostat and element have power. But not both at same time. Install ECO-protected thermostat for lower thermostat. Both upper and lower parts of tank are ECO-protected from overheating Rewire tank so upper and lower parts are separate. Use GM40 timer to switch power between lower and upper parts of tank. Normal operation, the lower thermost and element receive power and keep tank at temperature set point. Upper thermostat and element have no power. This is called 'redundant' water heater operation. This technique for heating tank more rapidly after cold water first enters tank. When timer activates, power to lower part of tank turns OFF. Power to upper part of tank begins. Upper thermostat is set for higher temperature. Since tank is at regular temperature, the higher setting means upper element will turn ON and begin heating tank to higher set point. Use this technique to heat water very hot for laundry cycle. Disadvantage: The lower part of tank will cool rapidly as new cold water enters tank, so this technique is good for making short-term batches of hot water. |
A) Changing water heater temperature with DTU40 timer requires dual-element water heater/ of any voltage B) To proceed, the lower thermostat on your dual element heater must be changed so it matches upper thrmostat. Why? The lower part of heater will require red reset button or energy cutoff to ensure the overheat safety feature is not bypassed. This will not affect anything if you want to rewire back to normal afterwards ... you can continue with the upper thermostat in the lower part of tank and still get normal operation. Thermostats are interchangeable/ each works with your water heater Rated for 120, 208,
277, 480 volt AC single phase and 3-phase. Temperature range 90-150° Therm-o-disc/ reset trip @ 170°No DC rating, but work with 48 volt DC. Temperature range 110-160° Apcom/ reset trip @ 180° Local YMCA hot tub = temperature 105°/... 2 water heaters Each water heater can have different 7-day schedule 10 gauge wire and 30 amp breaker run cooler. 30 amp circuit breaker and 10 gauge wire for water heater runs cooler with less energy loss. Breaker box lasts longer. Different wiring: For two 4500 watt water heaters, you can use one 40 amp breaker and 8 gauge wire to bring power from breaker box to the first timer.
