How to install 3-phase timer

Electricians forum
Engineering toolbox
3-phase timer Buildings with 3-phase power also have Neutral wire used to power ordinary 120Volt outlets.

1) Use 120 Volt timer.

2) Install 3-pole contactor with 120Volt coil

3) Timer controls 120Volt coil.

4) 3-pole contactor turns 3-phase power ON-andOFF.

Examples of this timer:
Intermatic EH10 7-day programmable
Intermatic T101 24-hour analog
Repeat cycle timers
Dawn-dusk timer
365-day programmable timers

3-phase industrial timers

3 phase tiimer Some timers have dry load terminals.

1) Timer clock is 120 volt.

2) Timer relays are dry and receive no power from clock wiring.

3) This type of timer can be used to control 24Vac power from a transformer.

4) Install 3-pole contactor with 24Volt coil

5) Timer controls 24Volt coil.

5) 3-pole contactor points turn 3-phase power ON-andOFF.

Examples of this timer:
Intermatic GM series
Intermatic ET series

Intermatic ET series
Intermatic ET9000 timer can be programmed with 4000 set points over 365 day calendar year. Each day of year can be different. Each month can be different etc.

Wire color codes at Wikipedia
3-phase wiring
Line-to-line voltage = line to neutral x √3
3-phase has 2 varieties: 3-wire: three hot wires and no neutral, and 4-wire: three hot wires and a neutral

Types of phase wiring

277 480 Three Phase WYE

480 volts across line-to-line

277 volts line-to-neutral

All Wye connections provide two voltages due to the common point or neutral connection.

Line-to-line voltage = 480V
Line-to-neutral voltage = 277V
277 Volt x √3 = 479.778 Volt

√3 = 1.7320
Voltages are higher or lower based on windings inside the transformer.
Power is generated at plant by rotating 3 coils in a magnetic field => power is sent out on 3 lines => power travels over wires to local area => power lines are connected to transformer => power is changed into specific voltage depending on which transformer is installed, and how the transformer is wired.
WYE or Delta configuration refers to how the 3-phase transformer coils are wired.
Inside each transformer are two coils: Primary coil is connected to power generation side. Secondary coil is connected to service wires that feed the service panel and circuit breakers.
If secondary coil is wound in WYE, then power to the service panel will always have a neutral, and two voltages.

Read about transformers
Primary coil (or winding) is connected to power generation side.
Secondary coil is connected to service wires that feed the service panel and circuit breakers.

Configuration shows Delta primary coil. And High leg delta secondary coil.

If secondary coil inside transformer is wound in Delta configuration, there is no point where equal potential can be made between line and neutral.
The midpoint winding S3 is tapped which gives 120V or 208 volt to line.
S1 and S2 cannot carry any 120Volt loads.
As a result, the S3 coil is used for all 120Volt loads, plus 1/3 all 3-phase loads, causing potential imbalance.
120Volt loads must not exceed 5% Kva
