Resource: safe electric wiring
Use only 600 volt wire.
Lamp cord, extension cords are not rated 600 volt.
Use copper wire only. Aluminum wire is fire risk and should be avoided or installed by professional.

armored cable
Non metallic flexible cables must carry ground wire, but do not have hazard of short circuit causing injury from shock.

Armored steel cable can be used as a grounded connection, and will protect wires from damage. Metal can be energized from an insulation failure.

All conduit ...metal, plastic ... flexible and rigid ... must be attached to structure, and attached to enclosures, boxes.
Movement, damage and deterioration are major cause of electrical failure.

Electrical tools must be insulated.
Always best to disconnect power, but insulation failure, lack of proper grounding, grounded neutral, lack of GFCI, out-of-code wiring, generator operating without transfer switch, and other problems still pose a risk to anyone working on electric power ... even when breaker is off.

15 Amp ceramic fuse Busman 15 Amp ceramic fuse fits inside fuseholder
Available hardware, etc
Common for microwaves.
Generally, household circuit breakers are slow acting... and this allows amp surge of heat for starting motors such as refrigerator, pump etc. So heat is allowed to build up inside slow-acting fuses and circuit breakers before tripping.
Fast-acting fuses and circuit breakers are not same as GFCI protection.
GFCI is instantaneous trip when short to ground is detected by ammeter inside GFCI device.
Fast and slow acting fuses wait until heat reaches fuse and then build-up of heat trips fuse.

Inline Fuseholder

Fuseholder holds fast-acting or slow acting fuse
If load rating of circuit cannot exceed strict limits, then choose fast-acting fuse.
For motor loads, slow acting fuse is better, since surge of amperage is needed to start motor.

Fuse protects all wires in the circuit
Hot wire from breaker is also protected by fuse

Contactors can control heavy Loads like water heater, motors, etc.
Magnetic Coil is activated by timer or switch.
Coil pulls down on contact points.
When coil is deactivated, a spring pushes contact points apart.
Contact points open and close circuit.

Use fuseholder to tap smaller gauge wire into larger wire
Fuse is not same as GFCI.
Both fuse and GFCI react to a short.
GFCI will trip instantly when short to ground is detected. The action is instantaneous, and will save a life when power suddenly flows to ground.
Fuse is different. Fuse reacts to buildup of heat. Open short will cause massive flow of amperage that will heat the wire and trip the fuse. But the process is not instantaneous.

Use in-line fuse when connecting 2 different gauge wires
Illustration shows smaller 12-2 cable connected to larger 10-3 cable.

The 10 gauge wire carries 240 volt plus a Neutral wire, and is protected by 30 amp breaker
The amp draw on 30 amp breaker is too large for 12 gauge wire.
12 gauge wire should have 20 amp breaker.
Connect smaller 12 gauge wire to 10 gauge wire using twist on wire connector. All connections must be inside electrically rated enclosed box with cover.
Use fuseholder with 20 amp fuse.
Fuse will protect entire length of 12 gauge wire.
Connect fuse to Hot wire.
Never put fuse on Neutral ... the Neutral wire must never be switched off, and must run continuous throughout installation.

If the 12 gauge wire is wired for 240V, instead of 120V shown in illustration, then fuses can be added to both hot wires.
Always make connections inside a box with cover

Get higher amp 120 volt from 240 volt line
Strategy for pool pump, shop tools, irrigation load etc
Bring neutral from nearby outlet or light fixture.
Note: 120 volt circuit needs Hot and Neutral, while 240 volt typically has 2 Hots and no Neutral. So the circuit needs a Neutral wire from a nearby 120 volt outlet ....

So why not just bring a Hot and Neutral over from the Nearby 120 volt outlet?
Answer: The motor load is 6 amps, but the 120 volt outlet is on a 15 amp breaker with safe maximum 80% = 12 amps. If the 15 amp circuit already supports several Loads, there is not enough spare amperage for the motor.
Note: Code says that Neutral wire is never switched on-off ... only the Hot wire is switched.
