To avoid problems, make sure each ON time has OFF time. Make sure programs do not conflict: for example is Program 1 ON is 8:03 am M-F all-days-of-week, but Program 2 OFF is 10:03 am T Tuesday (instead of M-F all-days-of-week) then timer will not operate as expected.
If the On-OFF button turns lights on-and-off with a click-sound each time, then timer is wired correctly.  If timer is wired correctly, but timer schedule will not work as programmed, then review programs starting with Step 4 above.
Days of the week include:
Individual days Mo thru Su
Weekdays M-F
Weekends WKD
ALL means all 7 days of week

How to wire ST01C & EJ500 and Ei600  This illustration is for replacing ordinary light switch that has 2 wires.
Red wire is only used in 3-way circuit ... if your lights click on-and-off after installing ST01C, you connected red wire where blue wire should go, so change them. Put wire nut over end of red wire so it is capped off.
If you connect Red and Blue wires together, the programming works in reverse, and 'off' becomes 'on' and 'on' becomes 'off'

1) Black wire from timer connects to Hot wire from breaker box
2) Blue wire from timer connects to Load (lights, fan, motor)

3) How to install.
Single-pole switch has two wires. Connect one wire to Timer Black and one wire to Timer Blue. If timer does not work after installation, then swap black and blue wires.

How to wire ST01C for 3-way/ Applies to ST01C, Ei600, EJ500, and Ei400 timers

Typical 3-way switch wiring

Common screw is dark-colored
Traveler-screws are brass colored
Line side connects to line from breaker
Load side connects to light

12-2 wire
3-way switch
Common screw is usually dark.
Timer replaces one 3-way switch
Other 3-way must be rewired
3-way switch
Timer replaces one 3-way switch
Other 3-way must be rewired
Identify wire that connects to common screw
Usually the dark-colored screw
1) Take photo of wires before disconnecting old switch.
2) Note which wire connects to dark-colored screw
3) If screws are not color-coded: Look on back of old switch to see which screw is marked common, and then mark that wire as common.

Common wire will connect to Timer Black wire, or Timer Blue wire.

Larger image

With timer on Load side: if electricity goes OFF, then timer will start to click on-off using the battery. If this happens, click the 3-way switch up or down. Afterwards, the timer will no longer click on-off.

If power remains off for a while, the current time must be re-programmed. However the scheduled programs are not affected by power outage and remain in memory forever until timer is manually reset.
ST01C timer wired for 3-way

Timer on Load side

Blue wire connects to wire that was connected to common screw
Timer black wire must always be connected to Hot
Blue wire must always go to Load
When power is applied to red wire, the timer programming reverses.

Remember, the remaining 3-way switch has to be rewired as if it was ordinary on-off switch using common screw and one traveller screw.
When the switch is turned ON-OFF, it reverses timer programming.

Timer Blue always goes to Load

When power is applied to Timer Red wire, the timer program reverses

When power is applied to red wire, the timer programming reverses.

Remember, the remaining 3-way switch has to be rewired as if it was ordinary on-off switch using common screw and one traveller screw.
When the switch is turned ON-OFF, it reverses timer programming.
Timer on Line side, same as illustration above
Timer Black wire MUST be connected to Hot.
Timer Blue wire MUST be connected to Load (light).
When power is applied to red wire, the timer programming reverses.

The blue wire must always go to Load, and the red wire is for reversing timer program.
So the only purpose of the 2nd 3-way switch is to reverse and re-reverse timer program.

Be sure to use dark-colored 'common' screw on 2nd 3-way switch as shown, and then use either of the other screws on the 2nd 3-way swtich.
Aube timer can be used to replace either 3-way switch
Test wiresIdentify wires inside 3-way switch box

3-way switch box will have minimum 3 wires.
Most 3-way boxes will have 5 wires.
Other 3-way boxes can have 7 wires, or more depending on the number of junctions connected inside the box.

Example shows typical 3-way switch box.
Two cables enter the box.
One cable has 3 wires plus ground
Second cable has 2 wires plus ground
Find HOT wire

Each 120Volt electrical box inside residential home has 1 black hot wire > except for 3-way and 4-way switches, and 240volt outlets fround on clothes dryer etc.

To find the hot wire:
Take photo image so wires can be put back.

Remove both 3 ways switches.
Mark each wire that connects to common screw on 3-way switch. Hot wire will always connect to common screw.

Separate all wires for testing.
Leave ground wires together
Tape tester leads to wood sticks for safety.
Turn power ON. Keep hands away. Stand on dry boards.
Test each wire inside box to bare ground wire.
Tester will light up on one wire.
This is the Hot wire.

Next test Hot wire to all other wires inside box except bare ground.
Tester will light up on Neutral.

ST01C/EJ500 cannot replace 4-way switch

Notice the timer replaces one 3-way switch, while the 4-way switch is replaced with ordinary 3-way switch.

Quick note. Manual has troubleshooting section. See ST01C Manual
The important thing to remember is that this timer will keep programming inside memory indefinitely until you use reset button. If timer is flashing 12:00 after replacing battery, then just set current time and then your old programs are still there.
As last resort for malfunctioning timer, hold down ON-OFF button and press and release reset button. Keep holding ON-OFF button until INIT flashes on display. Release ON-OFF and 12:00 will start flashing. If resetting timer does not restore functionality, then timer has gone bad. ST01C and battery operated timers do not require electricity for display to show. This timer has 1 year limited warranty from Intermatic. Warranty claim
Battery cannot be exposed to freezing temps longer than 20 days

Change CR2 battery on ST01C

If ST01C or EJ500 do not function correctly after battery change, then re-set timer and see if 12:00 is flashing. Then reprogram timer.

ST01C uses one CR2 battery
When exposed to freezing temperatures, battery will last 20 days.
