Check
gas pressure on water heater: Buy Gas Manometer, Gauge, Natural Gas, Propane, 0-35" W.C, Yellow jacket manometer 1) Quick assessment of gas pressure Watch what appliances do when adding load. If appliances stop working correctly when another gas appliance is activated, it implies low gas pressure. This observation can be done without equipment. 2) Supply gas pressure Supply gas pressure, or line pressure checks are measured before the gas control valve and as close to the water heater as possible. ''Commercial and residential gas water heaters and boilers are design-certified to operate with a maximum inlet gas pressure. To identify the maximum inlet gas pressure, refer to the labeling on the appliance and/or gas control/valve. For reference, industry standard is 14” w.c. (1/2 psi). '' "The minimum permissible gas supply pressure for the purpose of incoming gas supply to water heater is 1.0" water column (.25kPa) above the operating manifold pressure. See the rating plate and combination gas control for the manifold pressure and gas type. The maximum permissible gas supply pressure is 14.0" water column (3.5kPa) for natural gas and liquefied petroleum gases/propane gas. "The Gas Control is designed for a maximum line pressure of 14.0" w.c. and a minimum line pressure of 1.0" w.c. over the water heater’s rated manifold pressure. Line pressure must be checked with the main burner on and off to assure proper readings." If line pressure is low: increase gas pressure regulator, or call gas company. If line pressure is high, add gas pressure regulator, or call gas company. Pressure rating is shown on water heater label Check rating plate (label) located on side of water heater for gas pressure rating Typically, a propane heater will be higher than natural gas. Line pressure is pressure on incoming gas line. Label shows max inlet or line pressure as 14.0" w.c. Manifold pressure is gas pressure from gas control valve to burner. Label shows 4.0" w.c. to 5.0" w.c. for manifold pressure. If the burner and/or pilot do not function, service checks for gas pressure, thermocouple output, magnet assembly and ECO are to be performed. If these check OK, the gas valve may be faulty." "MANIFOLD PRESSURE TESTING (this procedure assumes a maximum line pressure of 14.0" w.c.) Step 1. Set gas valve to “OFF” position. Step 2. Remove pressure tap plug located on the bottom of gas control valve (or side of Intellivent gas valve) and install pressure tap. Step 3. Connect manometer to pressure tap. Step 4 Follow lighting instructions and light main burner and observe manometer reading. Step 5 Proper operating range for natural gas is 4.0 ±0.5" W.C. For intellivent 3.5 to 4.0" W.C. Proper operating range for L.P. gas is 10.0 ±0.5" W.C. Step 6 If pressure is OK, set gas valve to “OFF” remove manometer and pressure tap and replace pressure tap plug. Check for gas leaks before placing water heater back in operation. If manifold pressure is high, check if burner orifice is correct size. If orifice is correct and burner parts are clean, and pressure still measures out of range by +/- .3 inch, then go to next steps based on type of gas control valve. Image above shows bottom of Honeywell gas control valve For White Rodgers Intellivent and both types Honeywell electronic controls, the manifold pressure is not adjustable. If manifold pressure is outside the range shown in step 5, the gas control valve must be replaced. For White Rodgers mechanical control, the manifold pressure is not adjustable. If manifold pressure is outside the range in step 5, the gas control valve must be replaced. For Robertshaw mechanical control, the manifold pressure is adjustable, proceed to step 7 for adjustment procedure Step 7 While burner is in operation, remove regulator access cap to expose the regulator adjusting screw. With small screw driver, rotate adjusting screw clockwise to increase pressure and counter clockwise to decrease pressure. Step 8 Replace regulator access cap, set gas valve to “OFF”. Remove manometer and pressure tap and replace pressure tap plug. Check for gas leaks before placing water heater back in operation." Gas supply pressure is Low or High If line pressure is low: increase gas pressure regulator, or call gas company. If line pressure is high, add gas pressure regulator, or call gas company. Buy Manometer Gas pressure regulator |
Incoming gas pressure too high ''In the event an installation site has been exposed to inlet pressures above the ratings listed on the product and/or the gas control/valve, the gas control/valve must be replaced. Service/gas technician must inspect the entire appliance with focus on, but not limited to: burners, combustion chambers, heat exchangers and venting. In some cases, as determined by the qualified service/gas technician, the appliance may need to be replaced entirely. Suspicion that an installation site has been exposed to excessive inlet gas pressure would require following the directions noted above. Prior to installing the new gas control/valve and/or appliance and placing it back into service, the source of the excessive pressure must be identified and corrected by service/gas technician.'' |
"CHECKING GAS INPUT on AO Smith GCN-75 (75 gallon, 75,100 BTU) and GCN-100 (98 gallon, 75,100 BTU) With this specific AO Smith 75,100 BTU heater in operation, determine whether it is receiving the full rated input of gas. This may be done by timing the gas meter and measuring gas pressure with a gauge or manometer. When the heater is operating at full capacity (full gas input) it should consume approximately 1 cubic foot of gas in the time shown in Table 4. (applies only to this model heater) Use the formula on right to “clock” the meter. Be sure that other gas consuming appliances are not operating during this interval. Compare the actual input rate to that given on the heater’s rating plate. In the example, the full input rate should be 75,100 Btu/Hr for natural gas."
