Twin timer can be used to toggle between loadsTwin timer lets you run air conditioner for short duration each hour. The repeat cycle timer lets you keep home or building temperature moderated, and use less electricity during peak electric prices.. PV shows the time left in the count up for Mode B... so there is .78 seconds left before it switches to Mode A SV shows 2.99 ... which is the set time I choose for Mode B When 2.99 seconds ends, Mode A set time will display. Reduce run-time of air
conditioner. Problem: air conditioner runs too much during peak electric prices. Programmable thermostat for the air conditioner can control peak usage by raising temperature and reducing hours of operation during peak times, but it cannot be programmed to limit actual number of run-time minutes per hour. This diagram solves problem without compromising integrity of AC motor or equipment. The din rail timer is programmed so timer is ON during peak hours. Any programmable timer will do the job but din rail timers are available in both 120 and 240 volt models. And 12-24 volt also. When the din rail timer is ON, it turns ON a relay, and turns ON a twin timer. When the din rail timer is OFF, the relay is OFF and the twin timer is OFF. One of the 24 volt wires from thermostat is connected to the com terminal on one side of relay. When the din rail timer is OFF, the relay is OFF, and the 24 volt thermostat circuit is routed straight to the contactor for normal operation of air conditioner. When the din rail timer is ON, the relay is ON, and it switches the 24 volt thermostat wire away from contactor and to the Twin timer. The twin timer is rated for either 120 or 240 volt. Twin timer is designed to turn on-off-on-off-on-off in endless repeat cycle. ON times and OFF times are set independently, and can be any value between .01 second and 99.99 hours. For example, the twin timer ON time can be set for 40 minutes. And OFF time set for 20 minutes. This limits the operation of air conditioner to 40 minutes. During the 40 minute period, the twin time routes 24 volts to the air conditioner contactor for normal operation. After 40 minutes, the twin timer cycles OFF, and then air conditioner cannot turn on for 20 minutes until the twin timer cycles back ON again. When the 20 minutes expires, the twin timer again lets the 24 volts complete circuit to contactor for 40 minutes. The cycle of 40 ON and 20 OFF continues as long as din rail timer is ON. Set the din rail timer to turn ON during peak electric prices. Illustration on right shows same diagram except pulling power off the 240 volt AC circuit. Use 10-15 amp inline fuse to protect timer and relay circuit from 50-60 amp air conditioner circuit. Use terminals to connect the smaller wires to contactor. Prevent loose connection and risk of fire: Do not put two different gauge wires under the screw plate on contactor. Never put stranded wire under screw plate. Steve
says: I've been able to make the DH48S-S (twin timer) work pretty well for my need of limiting the run time of air conditioning compressor. My twin timer has a 24VAC coil so it I can hook it directly to the thermostat wires. Here's how I wired it up: Yellow (compressor) wire from thermostat connected to terminal 7 (the 24vac coil) Thermostat common wire to terminal 2 (the 24vac coil) Jumper from terminal 7 to terminal 8 (continue yellow wire to relay common) Yellow wire going to air conditioner contactor connects to terminal 5 on twin timer (relay normally closed contact) Set the time1 to 5 minutes (the "disallowed" off time") Set the time2 to 10 minutes (the "allowed but limited to x minutes" on time) So when the thermostat calls for cooling, putting 24 volt power on the yellow wire, it powers the timer and powers the relay, causing air conditioner to run for up to 10 minutes. If the thermostat stops calling before 10 minutes, the twin timer is un-powered and when it calls again, it starts in the "allowed but limited" t2 at 00 minutes, and allows it to go to 10 minutes. Beautiful! I also have a second timer that is set to the peak hours of 3 to 8 pm and it bypasses the twin timer during those times. Footnote about fuse: The illustration shown above has the timer ON during regular prices, and OFF during peak pricing. If the fuse blows out, the timer will remain OFF. This means the twin timer will be in control of the AC cycle at all times, until a repair is made. If the wiring is changed, so timer is OFF during regular price, and ON during peak, then if fuse blows, the AC will run normally even during peak pricing. To make this change in wiring, simply switch wires on terminals 3 and 5. Use a 10 amp fuse to protect timer circuit. A fuse will protect the entire length of wire and the timers. The fuses rarely if ever blow out or have a problem. Siemens Single-phase
Voltage monitor Rated 24-240 volt AC Why use voltage monitor? The problems of low voltage and phase fluctuation (lower voltage on one wire) do not affect resistance loads like light bubs or electric water heater, except to make them burn at dimmer capacity. However low voltage and phase fluctuations do affect inductive loads like contactors, relays, motors, pumps, HVAC causing problems such as chatter on contactors and relays, and lower rotation speed on motor, causing higher temperatures, and burning out the motor or shortening motor lifespan. A voltage monitor shuts off power when voltage spikes or falls on one line or the other. Buy: Single phase monitor Resource: How to wire phase monitors |
Larger image Toggle between two heat pumps Strategy so both heat pumps are not operating same time. Saves wear and tear on main breaker, reduces overall electric consumption, might save having to upgrade service panel. Main breaker stress test Outdoor compressor has to turn on before unit will heat or cool. The outdoor compressor is activated when 24 volt thermostat wires send 24 V AC to a contactor located on each outdoor unit. The contactor receives 240 volt power at all times ... and will be HOT at all times ... unless breaker is OFF, or pull out disconnect that is attached to the the structure (house) is pulled out. It is dangerous to work on comprssor unit unless power is disconnected. Remember, the thermostat on your interior wall does not make it safe to work on 240 volt outdoor unit. Cut off power, and open the access panel on side of heat pump unit and see the contactor ... it will have a start capacitor connected to one leg of the 2 hot wires going into the compressor motor. The thermostat wires connect to sides of contactor, and activate the 24 volt coil that turns contactor ON-OFF ... which turns heat pump unit ON-OFF. Select one of the 2 thermostat wires (either one), and wire circuit as shown in illustration. You need additional (1) 120 volt line with Hot and Neutral, (2) ink bird twin timer, (3) LY2 relay, (4) length of thermostat wire, (5) twist on wire connectors, and (6) ordinary 15 amp 3-way switch. To get a 120 volt line, you can select an interior 120 volt outlet that is close to air conditioner. Open the box, pull the outlet aside, and drill through back of box and through wall using 1/2" drill bit until you reach the exterior wall. Then run your wire out the hole, and install surface-mounted exterior box with a GFCI outlet. Or install GFCI for the interior outlet. Resource: How to add outlet Sheathed thermostat wire is rated for outdoor use, and is sun resistant, unsheathed bell wire is not rated for outdoor. All connections must be made inside electrically-rated enclosure. The relay will work in any temperature, while twin timer would be susceptible to temperature extremes. General operation: When 3 way switch is in one position, then the two heat pumps cannot turn ON at same time. Instead their schedule is controlled by how many hours you set on twin timer. For example set timer for 1 hour and during that period, heat pump1 can turn on any time thermostat calls for heat-cool .... then after that hour, heat pump2 is free to turn ON for 1 hour (or whatever time you set). Basically, you are just turning off the thermostat to each unit. Back and forth, endless cycling between heat pumps until 3-way switch is moved to other position ... after which, ordinary operation is restored and both heat pumps can turn ON at same time whenever thermostats call for heat-cool. |
Override thermostat? Add more programs to control furnace? Use ST01 without any voltage, or with any voltage I cannot say exactly which HVAC or thermostat wires you connect this to ../ for example the AC control board sends 24 volts to a contactor ... you can limit the times when the AC runs by cutting one of the wires, and insert ST01 as shown., but a programmable thermostat can do same job. It might be possible to override the thermostat operation and turn power ON when thermostat calls for off. The wire to ST10 does not need power, or it can have 12-24 AC/DC or 120, 208, 240, 277 volt AC. Timer red wire is capped. ST01 is programmable, or dusk-dawn timer. Dusk-dawn means timer is ON at night. Choose up to 6 on-off programs, or choose dusk-dawn. (either-or, not both) If you connect timer red and blue wires together, then timer programming is reversed, so timer is ON in day and OFF at night, or timed programs are inverted. You can simply cut a control wire, and insert ST01 as shown. Timer red wire is capped. If you connect timer red and blue wires, then timer programming is reversed... THIS means what? Why
can ST01 and Ei600 timers operate without voltage or control any
voltage? Including 24 Volt AC/ DC or 120-208-240-277 volts Because the timer is battery-operated. Battery lasts 2-3 years. Because the timer does not need to be connected to 120 Volt AC or 240 Volt AC power to operate. Just the battery is needed Timer can be located inside electric box, anywhere outdoors-or-indoors.
