Electrical Code and safety is
first consideration: Contactor must be attached inside enclosure (box) that is rated for electrical temperatures Do not use enclosures such as wooden box or plastic household box etc. Enclosure must have
cover that is made to fit tight Enclosure cannot be open to the air ... or have ventilation slats or fan etc Enclosure must be attached to structure The incoming volt and amp rating must match wire size, breaker size, and device rating. Not enough voltage and contactor chatters. Too much voltage and contactor melts. Undersized wire for the breaker rating can overheat wires. Cause of noisy contactor/ relay Mechanical contactors and relays operate with a coil of wire that produces magnetic field ... creating a humming noise when turned on. Humming noise is continuous during operation. Some meaterials will amplify the sound Steps to cut down on noise Put piece of styrafoam between enclosure and wall Use plastic enclosure instead of metal Insert rubber plumbing washers between contactor and enclosure. Do not attach enclosure directly to wood or metal structure ... materials can amplify sound. Use flexible and plastic conduit instead of rigid steel Turned off, a relay or contactor should make no noise ... unless one leg is somehow shorted to ground but the trickle of power doesn't trip breaker ... or might be shorted to neutral ... Investigation required... Chattering contactor/ relay If voltage going to contactor coil does not match coil rating, the contactor will rapidly open and close, causing a chattering sound. Correct voltage contactors and relays will 'chatter' when voltage is low (less than 80% rated value) ... ....they get hot and the coil melts (shorts out) if voltage is too high With 240 volt contactors that receives power from two hot lines Low voltage on one line vrs another line... You would tape tester leads to wood sticks then test each hot wire to ground wire for voltage reading .... Voltage irregularities are from the power company... If one leg of their 3 phase output is lagging or overload so the draw from each leg is not balanced, that can create issues Or if the transformer that supplies power to your location is malfunctioning off one leg, then it can affect household voltage There can be other issues ... the mathematics is way over my grade level difference-between-single-phase-and-3-phase How-to-wire-voltage-monitor AC vs DC Contactors are normally rated for AC (alternating current) and not DC (direct current from battery or solar panel). Most AC contactors have a rating for DC, as long as DC voltage is 12-24 volts, and sometimes 48 volts. If the contactor is rated AC and it is used for DC, then usually the point begin to burn, and eventually fuse together so Load does not turn off, or the wires melt followed by fire and complete failure. If contactor is not contained inside enclouse, a fire can spread. Unlike AC electricity, DC electricity has a arc that is diffricult to extinguish. DC can be cut off more successfully using multiple contact points. Contactors that are rated for higher volt DC are usually expensive. High volt DC relays are available in solid state. Other options Latching contactors are generally used for commercial lighting, because of noise, cost efficiency and durability. To turn on, they receive a short input or signal from control system (usually some kind of PLC or sometimes a timer that is rated for pulse). To turn off they receive another short input. Solid state relay will work . It runs hot, and sometimes requires a heat sink... meaning it consumes more power than your regular contactor. Probably not the best choice because when it fails, it fails in ON position and not off position. SSR is all-electronic and has no mechaical switch or internal connection that seperates two points. SSR is usually for electronic circuits utilizing DC where the issue of arc extinction is greater problem than heat loss from SSR..... that gets into difference between AC and DC electricity. The contactor is efficient and durable. It consumes 7 watts, with 30 watt inrush ... so it is efficient, and rated for millions of operations ...,. commonly found in air HVAC and industrial applications .... available at electric or HVAC supply houses, should sell for 9-15$ for 20-30 amp, and more for higher amp rating... up to $100s for 90 amp etc. The contactor is noisy in some installations depending on what they're attached to ... wood surfaces are the worst, and concrete wall in back of garage the best. Plastic enclosure is better than metal enclosure. I've been meaning to add this information to my website... and now your email gave me opportunity to review the issue. Other options Solid state relay/ SPST Silent operation Disadvantages: gets hot and might need heat sink, fails in closed position, not rated for as many operations as ordinary contactor, SPST (turns off one wire) and not DPST like ordinary contactor. Check for AC-AC input-output DC input to AC output is most common Buy: AC to AC input 80-280V AC input 24-380V AC Uxcell solid state relays Solid State relays Resource: Electromechanical relay vrs solid state relay/ pdf |
