Wall switches are generally rated
120-277
volt AC.
Look for volt and amp rating embossed on the electrical device. Do not exceed rating. Using 20 Amp switch on a 15 Amp circuit is potentially dangerous. It is acceptable to use 15 Amp switch on a 20 Amp circuit. For 240 volt applications, use double-pole switch. For other voltages, such as 480-347-600 volt etc, and for 3-phase applications, use switch or timer to activate contactor. |

120Volt and 240Volt breakers Image shows 120Volt line and 240volt line. Both circuits have ground wire. Each 120 and 240 require two wires to complete circuit. 120V requires 1 hot and 1 neutral 240V requires 2 hots Ground wires are for safety. Resources: Read more about 240 volt Some 240Volt lines have additional neutral wire. However, neutral not necessary to complete 240Volt circuit. Some 240Volt lines have white and black instead of red and black Most service boxes today have separate Neutral and Ground busbars, but these busbars are bonded together electrically, and are the same. Illustration on left shows both Neutrals and Grounds on same side of box. In actual box, the Neutral is on right side and ground on left. Illustration shows separated neutral and ground so it is easier to illustrate wires leaving breakers. Neutral wire must connect
to combo switch. Neutral is normally two or more white wires covered with wire connector and pushed to back of box. If box does not have Neutral wire, the Neutral must be brought from any nearby outlet or ceiling box. Box must have neutral. Hot wire connects to both switch and outlet on left side of switch. Neutral wire connects to Outlet on right side of switch. Load Hot going to light connects to switch on right side of switch. |
How to test for Hot and Neutral wire: Turn power off Separate all wires for testing except ground wires. Turn power on. Tape tester leads to wood sticks for safety. Keep hands away from power. Test each wire to bare ground wire. Tester lights up on Hot wire. Hot wire should be black (except 3-way switches) Test Hot wire to all other wires except ground Tester lights up on Neutral wire.
