Change water heater temperature using a timer

A) Changing water heater temperature with timer requires dual-element water heater/ of any voltage

B) To proceed, the lower thermostat on your dual element heater must be changed so it matches upper thrmostat. Why? The lower part of heater will require red reset button or energy cutoff to ensure the overheat safety feature is not bypassed. This will not affect anything if you want to rewire back to normal afterwards ... you can continue with the upper thermostat in the lower part of tank and still get normal operation.
Thermostats are interchangeable/ each works with your water heater
Rated for 120, 208, 277, 480 volt AC single phase and 3-phase.
No DC rating, but work with 48 volt DC.
 Temperature range 90-150° Therm-o-disc/ reset trip @ 170°
Temperature range 110-160° Apcom/ reset trip @ 180°
Thermostat mounting bracket Local YMCA hot tub = temperature 105°/...  Typical shower-bath = 110°F

Buy: 90-160 degree F for residential tank:

 C) Changing water heater temperature with timer requires additional 10 gauge wire running to lower part of tank/

Two options:
1) You can run conduit down to bottom part of tank as illustrated.
2) Use a fish bit and drill down through foam insulation.

control water heater with T106 timer

T-106R timer changes water heater temperature

Use timer for two different temperatures on electric water heater.
Applies to 240 Volt electric water heaters

For 120 volt heaters, use T105 timer
and same wiring diagram that shows on left
How to wire T105 timer
Either upper thermostat andelement have power or lower thermostat and element have power. But not both at same time.

Install ECO-protected thermostat for lower thermostat.
Both upper and lower parts of tank are ECO-protected from overheating
Rewire tank so upper and lower parts are separate.
Use T106 timer to switch power between lower and upper parts of tank.

Normal operation, the lower thermostat and element receive power and keep tank at temperature set point. Upper thermostat and element have no power.
This is called 'redundant' water heater operation. This technique for heating tank more rapidly after cold water first enters tank.
Resources:
How to wire thermostats

When timer activates, power to lower part of tank turns OFF. Power to upper part of tank begins. Upper thermostat is set for higher temperature.
Since tank is at regular temperature, the higher setting means upper element will turn ON and begin heating tank to higher set point.

Use this technique to heat water very hot for laundry cycle.
Disadvantage: The lower part of tank will cool rapidly as new cold water enters tank, so this technique is good for making short-term batches of hot water.

Change water heater temperature using timer

Change water heater temperature using GM40 or any DPDT timer
Applies to all DPDT timers shown at top of this page
Also applies to SPDT Intermatic T106 timer
Applies to 240, 208, 277 Volt electric water heaters Intermatic GM series
Use timer for two different temperatures on electric water heater.
This plan allows normal 120°F temperature for saving energy, and then increase temperature to 130-140°F for sterilized wash day or certain times of day. The same can also be accomplished with DPDT 40 amp switch or relay.
140°F is extremely dangerous. Typical bath shower is 110°F and Hot tub 105°F

Operation plan has two states: Either upper thermostat and element have power -or- lower thermostat and element have power. But not both at same time.
When timer activates, power to lower part of tank turns OFF. Power to upper part of tank begins. Upper thermostat is set for higher temperature resulting in very hot water at top of tank, but not whole tank. Disadvantage: If the upper part of tank is heating, then lower part of tank is off, so lower part of tank will cool rapidly as new cold water enters tank, therefore this technique is good for making short-term batches of very hot water.

Work required: Install ECO-protected thermostat for lower thermostat. This ensures both upper and lower parts of tank are ECO-protected from overheating.
Rewire tank so upper and lower parts are separate. Add 2 extra wires.
Use GM40 timer to toggle power between lower and upper parts of tank.

Other options include: 2 water heaters, mixing valve, recirculation system
