Control recirculation pump using One Shot timer | |
Choose Twin (cycle) timer or One
shot
timer mode Input voltage from 100-240 volt. Some models, 12-24 volt AC-DC input. Choose mode between One shot or Repeat-cycle. Timer has dry NO NC terminals, so you can connect any voltage to switch terminals. Set Repeat cycle or One shot Mode To set One Shot (also called: on delay, off delay, or countdown ... where a load turns on for set period of time and then turns off until timer is reset) - Apply power to timer. Press MD for 3 seconds. Press MD to choose settings: minute, second, hour. When t,nod appears, select the 4 dashes, then press and hold MD button for 3 seconds to exit Mode. To set times, the Lock mode must be OFF. Once you exit Mode, press RES button to set time A and then press MD to set Time B. One shot mode is either On delay or Off delay depending how timer is wired. After the time period expires, the load turns OFF or ON and remains ON or OFF until you reset by momentarily connecting and then disconnecting terminals 4 and 3 with a Normally open push button (like a doorbell button), or timer, home automation, momentary switch etc... or reset timer by disconnecting and reconnecting power to timer. To set Repeat cycle (this is for a blinking application on-off-on- ... or a repeating either-or application like christmas display blinking red-green-red-green etc until power is disconnected) - Apply power to timer. Press MD for 3 seconds. Press MD to chose settings: minute, second, hour. When t,nod appears, select the rectangle with dashes, then press and hold MD button for 3 seconds to exit Mode. To set times, the Lock mode must be OFF. Once you exit Mode, press RES button to set time A and then press MD to set Time B. If seconds are chosen for time period A, then time period B must also be seconds. For example a car alarm is a cycle or twin timer ... honk-honk-honk indefinitely until power is cut. Christmas displays, and blinking store lights etc use twin timer in repeat cycle mode. Timer starts when it receives power and stops when power is off. Then it restarts when power resumes. For example you can set the repeat cycle to turn on for 10 minutes and off for 99 minutes. Mode A would be 10 minutes, Mode B would be 99 minutes. Or ... turn on for 10 minutes and then turn on another circuit for 99 minutes. |

Load Max rated load on the timer is 10 amp. Using a relay will preserve life of timer since motor start-up pulls surge of amps through terminals 8-7 on the one-shot timer. How it works: Set twin timer to one shot mode ... instructions shown in section above. Connect 120 or 240 volt AC power to terminals 10-9. Connect other wires as shown. Off delay uses terminals 8-7 as shown (or 11-12) ... while on delay would use 7-6. Push doorbell button, or momentary toggle switch ... this will start the inkbird one-shot timer timer (do not energize the doorbell wires on start switch circuit with any voltage). Timer turns ON and begins countdown. Timer terminals 7 and 8 turn ON. This causes the pump to turn on ... or causes the relay or contactor coil to energize. Circuit to recirculation pump turns ON. When countdown expires, terminals 7 and 8 turn OFF, pump turns off, or relay coil or contactor coil is de-energized and pump turns OFF. Twin timer that is set to one-shot mode, and powered by 120-240V, will operate .9 seconds to 99 hours. So the pump can run any length of time: for example 1 hour or 21 minites etc. Do not connect power to terminals 1 thru 5. Always use
contactor (or relay) to energize heavy amp load Why? So high amperage (and heat) does not flow through the timer ... instead the only amperage flowing through the relay located at terminals 8-7 will be to energize the 27 watt coil on contactor. Using a contactor will extend life of timer, and protect overall integrity of circuit. Suggest using a line fuse for power going to 9, and then jumper a wire from 9 to 8. This will ensure timer cannot be exposed to high amperage Buy: Twin timers at Amazon Sestos twin timer Omron DH48S twin timer Contactor with 120Volt coil |
Advantage of this one-shot timer:
the reset does not require power to be turned
off then back on, wires going to remote locations carry no voltage, and
you can have 2-3-4-5 etc remote locations. Other advantages: hardwire is cheaper, more reliable and long lasting than home automation, and the design is modular for easy part replacement. |

Momentary contact switch This is best choice since it can fit into electric switch box that is mounted in wall. Resource: How to install old work box Terminals 3-4 on the twin timer are for Reset. When terminals 3 and 4 are momentarily touched together using a momentary switch or a push button, it starts the recirculation pump. When the programmed time expires, the recirculation pump turns off, and the timer waits until the Reset is activated again. Do not apply power to terminals 3-4. For the reset to work, terminals 3 and 4 need to be joined or touched together and then disconnected from each other. If an ordinary on-off toggle switch is used instead of a momentary switch, the the toggle must be turned on and then off for the Reset to take place.
