How to wire 240 volt outlets and
plugs Rule of thumb: the hot wires connect to side of outlet. |
240 volt circuits | |
Larger image |
Single-phase 240 volt outlet is
marked X-Y-W-G or X-Y-G 120V and 240V need two wires to complete circuit, and ground wire for safety. 120V requires 1 hot and 1 neutral. 240V requires 2 hots. Neutral is not needed for 240volt electric circuit, but is sometimes included on electrical device. Resources: See inside main box Figure volts amps watts Select correct wire and breaker Electrical formulas Commercial 3-phase outlet is marked X-Y-Z-G or X-Y-Z-W-G Resource: How to wire 3-phase |
Basics | |
The hot wires connect to brass-colored screws located on side |
Look for screw color on outlet Brass (or black) for Hot, Silver for Neutral, Green for ground Some outlets do not have color-coded screws. Hot wires can be Black-Red or Black-White Green screw => bare copper or green ground wire Silver screw => Neutral. Neutral not required for 240 volt Ignore Neutral screw if no neutral wire available. |

Hot wires can be red and black -or- white and black Either hot wire can connect to either brass terminal Look for color of screws when wiring outlets Green for ground, Hot1 and Hot2 connect to either brass-or-black screw. Outlet might not have neutral wire. Neutral not required for 240 volt Ground connection: Look For green screw |

How
to
test for 120volt or 240volt How to know if wire carries 120V or 240V? Tape tester leads to wood sticks, and stand on dry wood boards. Never stand on outdoor ground soil, or touch or lean into metal. Put down dry boards. Separate wires for testing. Test each wire to bare ground wire. If both wires test for power to ground, the circuit is probably 240Volt. Use multi-meter to confirm exact voltage. Test each wire to bare ground. If tester shows power then wire is Hot Buy: Electrical testers |
Code
says: Use connected/ double-pole breaker
Against code: Use 2 single breakers to supply 240 volt, unless the switches are connected and rated for same amps |

Tandem
breakers This panel has several tandem breakers Each tandem fits over one busbar, and pulls double duty, supplying two separate circuits and increasing number of breaker circuits. You cannot draw 240 volt from one tandem breaker.. But if two tandem breakers are side-by-side, then 240 Volt is possible. For 240Volt, select the inside terminals... one from each tandem breaker. Connect 240V wire to these two terminals. To meet code, notice there is a connector bar (color reddish) that physically joins the two switches. If you are connecting 20 amp 240 volt, then both breakers must be 20 amp. In other words, 20 amp 240 volt breaker is NOT two 10 amp breakers, and both legs are pedaling the bike at 20 amps, and not 10 amps apiece. This question arises among electricians. 20-30 amp Twist Lock | |
You can use 30 amp twist lock for 15 or 20 amp circuit. But you cannot use 20 amp for 30 amp circuit. You can use a 4-wire twist-lock device with 3-wire installation. But you can not use 3-wire twist lock with 4-wire installation. You should never use 120 volt device for 240 volt circuit.... buy the correct rating for load. Why Leviton: quality materials (ie brass connection screws) and durability over time. Why 125-250 volt ratings instead of 120-240 volt: incoming service voltage can vary at each location. |

Example shows unusual case where 240Volt circuit has neutral and no ground wire. 240Volt circuit does not require ground wire, or neutral. Both Neutral and ground wires join inside the breaker panel, and are essentially serving same function. However, it is not code to complete 120Volt circuit using ground wire. So this example lets each outlet have 120volt capability. Notice that X and Y are Hot, W is Neutral, and there is no G for ground. |

3-phase
outlets and plugs Cooper phase wiring diagrams |
Larger image Outlet shown can be used for 3-wire 3-phase or 2-wire single-phase. 3-phase is commercial electricity used to achieve higher average voltage and more efficiency. Voltages vary from 120-600 V depending on electric service and wiring is different than residential single-phase. Single phase requires 2 wires to complete circuit: either Hot-Hot for 240 volt or Hot-neutral for 120 volt, while 3-phase requires 3 Hot wires to complete each circuit: Hot-Hot-Hot. Single-phase is actually a derivative of 3-phase. Since 3-phase can have a Neutral wire along with the 3 Hot wires, one Hot wire and one Neutral or two Hot wires make single-phase... so commercial applications can use 3-wire 3-phase to run motors and process equipment while using ordinary 2-wire single-phase for lights etc. Buy: Locking receptacles at Amazon Twist lock plug / 30 amp/ at Amazon Twist lock outlet / 30 amp/ at Amazon 30 amp generator outlet Resources: How to wire 3-phase 3-phase electricity: from power plant to end user |
