Larger image If tank appears to be overheating, it can be caused by stacking Stacking is a specific condition where water heater has very hot water after repeated short draws of hot water. The water temperature is normal at other times. Applies to both gas and electric heaters. Stacking is caused with repeated short draws of hot water. Each time hot water is drawn out of faucet, cold water immediately enters bottom of water heater tank through the dip tube. Dip tube is a plastic pipe connected to cold water inlet. Cold water enters bottom of tank near gas water heater thermostat, or near lower thermostat on electric heater. How it happens: Water heater must be fully heated to start. Burner or elements are off, and tank is fully heated. A short draw of hot water is taken from faucet, and that causes cold water to enter tank. Another short draw. And then another short draw, each draw happens near same time as other draws. Water at top of tank is already at full temperature, but bursts of cold water cause thermostat to turn on burner or element. Water heater heats more hot water, and more hot water rises to top of tank. Top of tank was hot before, but with added heating, the water becomes hotter than usual. Results: Typically the problem is not a major issue with minor changes in water usage. However the condition can cause TP valve to release water, and cause ECO energy cut-off to trip on upper thermostat of electric water heater. Resource: Troubleshoot and replace TP valve |

Unexpected things to look for If single-handled faucet is opened straight upward, then that will draw both hot and cold water out of water lines. Resource 9 ways to save with water heater Crossover can cause stacking. Single-handled faucets can have 'crossover' between hot and cold sides because of defect faucet cartridge. Other crossover suspects can include recirculation system, check valve, mixing valve etc. When crossover is present, hot water draws each time the defective faucet or recirculation system is turned on. Resources Test for Crossover Mixing valve Other causes of very hot water can be bad thermostat or thermostat set too high Resources How to replace thermostat on electric water heater How to replace thermostat on gas water heater Troubleshoot gas water heater thermostat Test thermostats How to adjust temperature |
