Weatherstrip and insulation: Caulk and weather-strip around windows and doors to stop air leaks.
Seal gaps in floors and walls, and around pipes and electrical wiring.
Insulate water pipes.
Add insulation to your attic, crawl space and any accessible exterior walls.
Wrap your water heater with insulation or install insulating blanket.

Heat AC: Change air filters monthly.
Use programmable thermostat to turn down heat automatically.
Tune-up heating and cooling system annually to keep it running efficiently as possible.
Have duct work inspected, and repair leaks.
Do-it-yourself test for ductwork: Tape strip of paper to end of stick, turn on blower, run stick along duct, if paper is blown by draft of air, then duct is leaking at that spot.
Keep heat sources such as lamps and appliances away from thermostat.
Keep outside air unit clean and clear of debris or weeds.
Use whole house attic fan instead of running AC
Keep windows and doors located near thermostat closed tightly.

Fireplace:
Close damper when not in use. Put cover or glass door over opening.
Use exterior air intake since fire will draw cold air through cracks around windows and doors

Lights and general use: Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent – they use 75 percent less energy
Turn off lights, televisions and other appliances when not in use. Use a timer
Install foam gaskets behind electrical outlet and switch-plate covers
Use low-watt bulbs where lighting is not critical.
Place floor lamps and hanging lamps in corners. The reflection off walls will give more light.
Turn off outdoor lighting during the day. Use outdoor timer, photoeye, or in-wall timer with dawn-dusk feature to automate lights.

Buying new appliance: Look for ENERGY STAR label when replacing large or small appliances.
Energy star will save $2-6 per year on same size appliance
Compare appliance wattage and buy replacement appliance with lower wattage. Save appliance manuals for list of repairs, warranty.

Home electronics: Use power strips for home electronics and turn off power strips when equipment is not in use. See power strip timers

Refrigerator: Clean refrigerator coils regularly to keep compressor running efficiently.
Replace worn-out seals on refrigerator and freezer.
Set refrigerator temperature at 36-39 degrees Fahrenheit and freezer at 0-5 degree Fahrenheit.
Defrost frozen food in refrigerator before cooking.
Keep freezer full. The fuller the freezer, the less cold air you lose when opening door.

Microwave: Use microwave when possible – it cooks faster and doesn't create as much heat as a stove burner.

Dishwasher: Air-dry dishes instead of using dishwasher's heat drying option.
Run dishwasher and clothes washer only when full.

Stove- Oven- Dryer: Match size of pot or pan to size of burner.
Use oven light to check on progress when cooking or baking instead of opening door.
Use self-cleaning cycle of oven right after you finish baking. That will give it a head start in heating up.
Make sure clothes dryer's outside vent is clear, and clean lint filter after every load.
Dry one load of clothes immediately after another to minimize heat loss. Dry fill loads. Use clothes line in summer.

Vents:
Install countdown timer on bathroom vent fan and whole-house attic fans. Countdown timer horsepower ratings
Make sure attic is fully vented to protect roof deck from rot and to cool airspace in summer.

Hot water:
Reduce hot water use by taking shorter showers and using cold water for rinse cycle in wash machine.
Shower uses 4-9 gal hot water/ bath uses 12-15 gal hot water

Water use: Install low-flow faucets and shower heads.
Use shower timer.
Fix leaky faucets – one drop per second can add up to 165 gallons a month.
Do not turn on hot tap when using cold water. Fix faucets with crossover problem
