Copper ground wire. Every device, load, metal enclosure etc must be grounded. Ground wire must be continuous throughout installation, never switched on-off, never used as a Neutral wire. Generally ... use same size as other wire in circuit Buy: 12 gauge copper ground wire Ground wire Green ground wire Ground pigtails Ground rods/ ground clamps at Amazon |
Armored cable can be used as a grounded connection, and will protect wires from damage. Metal can be energized from an insulation failure. Non metallic flexible cables must carry ground wire, but does not have hazard of short circuit causing injury from shock. All conduit ...metal, plastic ... flexible and rigid ... must be attached to structure, and attached to enclosures, boxes. Movement, damage and deterioration are major cause of electrical failure. Buy: Armored cable Southwire armored cable cutter Non-metallic flexible conduit Power whip Pull boxes |
Electrical tools must be insulated. Always best to disconnect power, but issues of insulation failure, lack of proper grounding, lack of GFCI, out-of-code wiring, generator operating without transfer switch, and other problems pose a risk to anyone working on electric power. Buy: Electrician tools kits Klein tools Tools kits |
12 ga Stranded wire is good for conduit with multiple wires ... but stranded cannot be installed under screw terminals on outlets, switches, timers etc without risk ... of heat causing splayed strands ....that come loose ... and begin to arc. Connect stranded to short piece of solid copper wire, and attach solid to screw terminal. Do not solder residential or commercial wiring. Buy: Rolls of stranded wire |
Protect wiring from damage Use nipper instead of pliers or screwdriver for removing staples (and nails). Do not damage cable or wires inside cable. -Code says: Cable SHALL BE secured without damage to the outer covering. NEC sec. 336-15 Buy End cutting nippers at Amazon |
Electrically insulated tools When removing insulation from wire, do NOT score or put cuts on surface of copper wire. Doing so increases resistances and heat on wire and creates possible weak point. Buy tools: Wire strippers at Amazon Linesman pliers Utility knife at Amazon |
Multimeters Voltage is tested across two separate wires. Ohms or resistance is tested across both ends of same wire. Amperage is tested along one or two points on same wire. larger Toggle car charger using 30 amp 3-way switch: Buy: 30 amp 3-way switch Car charge station Incoming 240 volt line from breaker has 2 hot wires.... one hot wire (white wire) runs to both the charge station and the water heater ... connect the second hot wire (black wire) to the common terminal or different-colored screw on 3 way switch. Second wire to water heater connects to one of the other screws, and second wire to charge station connects to remaining screw. Generally best to hook wire around screw terminal, or at least get a bend on it, so it is less likely to pull loose. Insert wire on left side of screw so tightening screw pulls wire in, and doesn't push wire out. Tighten screw very tight using correct size screwdriver. Undersized screwdriver can cause a loose connection. All connections must be made inside electrically-rated enclosure (box) that is make to fit a switch. Enclosure must have a cover installed. Metal enclosure must be grounded, plastic box does not need ground. All devices and loads must be grounded. Wires, cables, boxes must be attached to structure. Buy: Deep switch box Note all switches have a volt and amp rating embossed in the metal or plastic part of switch. Single-pole and 3-way 30 amp switches are rated 120-277 volt. So these 30 amp switches work with 120, 208, 240, 277 volt. All double-pole switches are rated 240 volt, including 30 amp double pole. This mean it can be used on 120-208-240 volt. 30 amp switches can be used on 15-20-30 amp circuit, but not 40-50 amp circuit. Builder grade 15 amp switches that are rated 120 volt can only be used for 120 volt. Not for 240 or other voltage. 15 amp switches can be used on 15 or 20 amp circuit, but cannot control 30 amp load. |

Larger image Toggle between 30 amp Loads Sometimes there are not enough circuit breakers for new 240 volt 3 HP irrigation pump, or above ground swimming pool pump, or water well pump ... or a temporary drainage pump etc ... or even a second water heater. Timers shown below are rated 40 amp. Use the 40 amp timer to toggle between 240 volt loads, and set timer to schedule irrigation pump. When pump is off, the water heater receives power. 240Volt circuit can be cut off by turning off one Hot wire (as illustrated), or two Hot wires. Using 1 Hot wire is convenient, and preserves the second set of contact point, or frees them up to control another load ... but 1 Hot might be against local code for irrigation pumps. Put water heater on NC normally open terminal, so water heater is ON when pump is Off. Use any 15 amp timer, home automation switch or module or outlet ... or ordinary 15 amp single-pole toggle switch. Switch or timer or automation turns the relay on or off. When relay is on, then the NO terminal sends power to car charger. When relay is off, the NC contact sends power to pump, motor, water heater etc. |

10 gauge or 12 gauge? Compare your wire with short pieces of 10 and 12 gauge wire from local box store Check rating label on eachy electric device to find total amp draw. Always match amp rating with correct wire and breaker. 10 gauge for 30 amp breaker. 10 gauge wire usually has black-white or sometimes black-red. Black-white can be used for 120 or 240, black and red 240 volt only. 12 gauge for 20 amp breaker 12 gauge will have black and white wires. 12 gauge can be used for 120-240 same as 10 gauge wire.
