Copper ground wire. Every device, load, metal enclosure etc must be grounded. Ground wire must be continuous throughout installation, never switched on-off, never used as a Neutral wire. Generally ... use same size as other wire in circuit Buy: 12 gauge copper ground wire Ground wire Green ground wire Ground pigtails Ground rods/ ground clamps at Amazon |
Non metallic flexible cables must carry ground wire, but do not have hazard of short circuit causing injury from shock. Armored steel cable can be used as a grounded connection, and will protect wires from damage. Metal can be energized from an insulation failure. All conduit ...metal, plastic ... flexible and rigid ... must be attached to structure, and attached to enclosures, boxes. Movement, damage and deterioration are major cause of electrical failure. Buy: Non-metallic flexible conduit Power whip Armored cable Southwire armored cable cutter Pull boxes |
Electrical tools must be insulated. Always best to disconnect power, but insulation failure, lack of proper grounding, grounded neutral, lack of GFCI, out-of-code wiring, generator operating without transfer switch, and other problems still pose a risk to anyone working on electric power ... even when breaker is off. T100 series timer with 40 amp switch T100 series timers are rated 40 amp, 5 HP max Using a 40 amp motor control switch allows you to override any load that the timer successfully controls. Watt or power consumption should appear on rating plate for each Load (motor, fan, lights, appliance etc) Divide watts by the voltage ... in this case, the voltage for T101 is 120 ... so if load consumes 3500 watts divided by 120 volt = 29 amps. This is within the 32 watt safe maximum of any 40 watt switch (safe maximum = 40 amps x 80% = 32 amps) Buy: 40 amp switch with 32 amp safe max Motor switch MS302 30 amp 2-pole switch Buy 30 amp switch with 24 amp safe max: 30 amp motor switch 30 amp 2-pole switch 30 amp industrial grade Leviton 3033 switch 30 amp 3-way switch |

T101 using 40 amp contactor and freeze thermostat --A freeze thermostat or freeze switch will turn Load ON when temperature drops below 40°F, and then turn off when temperature rises again. -Low cost way to turn on pool or irrrigation pump or heater etc when freezing temperatures are expected. Note the contactor coil should be 120 volt, or same voltage as timer. -When temperatur drops, then the freeze thermostat completes circuit to the contactor coil. Contactor coil pulls the switching terminals together, and overrides the timer, turning on the Load. -Contactor is approx 2" wide, 2.3" long, and 2.6" tall. -There is generally NOT enough space in the wiring compartment of T101 to add a contactor. The contactor must be installed inside an electrically rated enclosure. Twist-on wire connectors are very reliable, and withstand overamperage and severe conditions of residential electricity. Applies
to wires that are twisted together
Applies to wires that are placed sided-by-side Applies to stranded and solid wires Professional electricians twist size 10-12-14 gauge wires. Larger gauge wires are not twisted together, but joined side by side. Heavy amp wires or large gauge wires are connected side by by side... best is a lug connection. Professional commercial wiring considerations are different than residential wiring in some ways because of higher amperage, more usage, and larger wires etc. Resource How to twist wire |
Keep wires straight Use solid copper wire If wiring terminal or end of wire are covered with green, use emery board to clean terminal and sandpaper to clean wire. |
Applies to timers, wifi etc/ info source Intermatic |

Both
wires MUST be same gauge Straighten each wire If wire is corroded or overheated, clean the end with sandpaper and wipe with cloth. If wire has been melted, cut back and reattach, or replace wire. Tighten screw very tight against copper wire |

Installation tips -Secure wire or conduit to enclosure. All wires, enclosures and conduit must be secured to structure. -Always use solid copper wire under timer screw terminals ... stranded wire can come loose and cause fires. -Keep enclosure door closed to prevent possible fire hazard from spreading. -Keep insulator over screw terminals to prevent accidental electrocution hazard. -Install enclosures away from hazards such as lawn mower or machinery. -Install outdoor boxes in sheltered area if possible and 12" above anticipated snowfall. -For safety, make sure Load is grounded correctly. People often forget to securely join the ground wires inside timer because wire sometimes gets a bit short. Buy extra length of wire from box store. Load must be grounded. Use correct wire and breaker Oversized is OK, undersized is hazard Look at label on load to determined correct size wire and breaker Watts divided by volts = amps If Load is 120 volt, and watts is 1500 = 12.5 amps. Next calculate 80% safe maximum. 20 amp breaker x .80 = 16 amps safe maximum 15 amp breaker x .80 = 12 amps safe maximum The calculation shows that 4500 watt load requires 20 amp breaker and 12 gauge wire up to 150 feet. Longer distance, use larger wire and breaker. Buy from my affiliate links: Southwire cable and tools Resources: Figure volts amps watts Match wire and breaker size |
