 Can
the Effex recover from FV event without replacing water heater?
Generally yes. The
FV sensor will trip if it senses gasoline vapors in the air. It
does not respond to other types of flammable vapors.Research shows that gasoline is the most common cause of fire or explosion caused by water heater. Note: FV Sensor does not prevent the ignition of flammable vapors, the FVIR System is designed to reduce the risk of flammable vapor-related fires. The FV sensor can also fail due to dust, dirt, moisture or simple defective part. FV sensor must be kept clean and cannot be exposed to water. Flooded water heater must be replaced. Water rising just above the FV sensor might also flood the combustion chamber forcing replacement of heater and not just replacement of FV sensor. The FV sensor is located inside a compartment on front of heater as images show. Open the FV compartment located on front of Effex heater.... Test and replace the FV sensor. It might be faulty.   Reset procedure from 2019 service
manualAssuming the FV sensor is functioning, wires are not damaged "Should the FV-Sensor of this water heater detect the presence of flammable vapors the following FV-Sense Reset Sequence must be entered into the Electronic Control Display. NOTE: “BEFORE RESETTING THE FVIR SENSE IN THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL DISPLAY, THOROUGHLY INSPECT THE AREA AND REMOVE THE SOURCE OF THE FLAMMABLE VAPORS”. 1. Manual reset is accomplished by first turning off the power to the water heater for at least 10 seconds. 2. Then, while pressing the two temperature adjustment buttons on the display, turn the switch on the gas control valve/thermostat to the on position. All the display icons will start to flash. Temporarily release both temperature adjust buttons and within 2 seconds, press both temperatures adjust buttons again until all the display icons are on steady. Release the two temperature adjust buttons. The system will clear the fault, perform a reset, and normal operation will be restored." |
 Power
to heater can be turned off by unplugging unit from 120 volt outlet, or
using the On-Off switch located on right side of gas valve, as
illustration from product manual shows. The thermostat probe
contains a thermistor and ECO (energy cut off).
''Thermistors are thermally (heat) sensitive variable resistors. A change in water temperature changes the resistance (measured in ohms) of the thermistor. The gas control valve interprets change in resistance as a change in temperature and uses information to activate and deactivate call for heat." ECO will trip if water inside Effex tank exceeds 180°F high limit. This will cause thermostat to shut off gas to burner. ECO for Effex is single-use, and tripped ECO indicates the gas valve is non-functioning ... gas control valve must be replaced. Effex display monitor will blink ECO error. The high limit of 180°F means Effex cannot be used to store solar heat that can reach 180°F, or higher given the issue of global warming. Use a solar storage tank from AO Smith instead of Effex. |
