Larger image |
How
long does it take to fill 1 gallon jug 10 seconds = 6 gallon per minute 15 seconds = 4 gallon per minute 20 seconds = 30 gallon per minute 30 seconds = 2 gallon per minute |
Gpm
is gallon per minute. Average faucet can be 2 gallons per minute |
|
Estimate
distance from
water heater to faucet. Figure that pipe make turns inside walls. Typical household pipes to faucet are ½ |
|
Estimate
water flow at
faucet. Average faucet can be 2 gallons per minute. Average tub can be 2 - 1/2 Gpm. At 2 Gpm, the faucet will fill 1 gallon container in 30 seconds. To estimate Gpm water flow at faucet, use 1 gallon container and cooking timer. |

Compare
distance from water heater to amount of time
hot water takes to arrive using chart This will give baseline for condition of plumbing pipes 4) Results: (a) If water flow is low, then you may have clogged pipes. Or clogged water heater. Etc. If flow on hot side is slower than cold side, then you have clog in hot water pipes. Read about low water pressure (b) If water flow at single handle faucet is good, and you get plenty of cold water, BUT hot water isslow to arrive Remember if handle is lifted in center, then equal amounts of cold and hot are drawn, sodistances shown in chart are halved. If hot water never arrives or is very slow to arrive, then faucet cartridge is bad. If hot water is slow to arrive at all faucets, then there is a crossover problem. Resource: Read about crossover |
|
d)
If you have recirculation system, and cold water
never arrives, or hot water never arrives, then you have crossover
problem shown in chart above. Clean recirculation pump and water connections with white vinegar or CLR. Resource: Water heater recirculation systems |

Resource: Low hot water pressure Buy: Water pressure gauges Watts telltale Pressure Gauge 276H300 Telltale pressure gauge is left in place for a day, and marks the highest pressure so user can tell if there are pressure spikes that are causing TP valve to leak water, or other possible problems. |
