How to replace garage door spring |
|
Broken spring must be repaired for safety and paractical usage. Temporarily wedge a 2x4 under the open door to hold it open until repair is made, or leave the door closed. |
Step 1: Identify broken spring/ cautionsTwo springs are recommended on each garage doorIf your 1-spring door feels heavy. Install second spring If the spring breaks on 1-spring door, the heavy door can crash down. You will be unable to lift door. A 1-spring door can be dangerous. Install second spring On 2-spring door, generally both springs do not break same time 2-spring garage doors are safer Springs are responsible for holding the full weight of the garage door. On 2-spring door, sometimes one spring will break. Symptom: the garage door feels heavy to lift. Symptom: The automatic opener might grind to a halt before door is open, or opener might sound like it is straining. It is only necessary to replace the broken spring |

Step 2: Remove broken springWith a 2-spring door, there is one spring located on each side of center. When one spring is broken, the other spring is holding all the weight. The unbroken spring is coiled very tight. You must act with caution. There is incredible force on these springs/ up to 30 turns of torsion The unbroken spring must be unwound before removing the broken spring. This is simple enough, when you know the safety precautions. For example, professional winding bars fit the opening exacly and will not come loose easily. If some other bar is used, it can easily slip out out of the hole and the heavy spring is suddenly uncontrollable. Do not let anyone stand in front of the spring. Method for removing the unbroken spring is to insert 1 winding bar to hold the spring from unwinding, loosen nuts with 7/16" wrench, and then use two professional winding bars to slowly unwind the spring.
