Wall switches are rated by voltage and amperage, .... and roughly rated by manufacturer for application such as builder grade, architectural grade, 'heavy duty,' etc. Look for volt and amp rating embossed on the electrical device. Switch
ratings include 120 (for 120 volt only), 120-277 (for 120-208-240-277
volt), 240 (always double pole and used for 120-208-240 volt) , and
600 volt double and triple pole motor control switches for any
residential or commercial voltage. Amperages range from 15 to 40 amp. It is acceptable to use 15 or 20 Amp switch on a 20 Amp circuit, but never on 30 amp. 30 amp circuit requires 30 amp switch. The switch cannot be rated for fewer (less) amps than amp rating of load. A Neutral wire is never switched. Neutral must be continuous throughout structure and cannot be switched on-off. Switch must be grounded, with ground wire connected to green ground screw. High voltage commercial switches without ground screw must be attached to metal box and conduit that are grounded. Never use Neutral as ground or ground as Neutral. Switches must be installed inside electrically rated switch box (metal or plastic). Cannot
use homemade box, round box, octagon box, square junction box, pull box
etc for switches. Box must be attached to structure, wires must be
attached to box, box must have electrically-rated cover made to fit
that box, cover must be attached tight and flush against box, and cover
must stabilize switch from movement. Resource: Safe electric wiring |
Electrical wiring device with switch and plug. 1) Polarized outlet has a wide blade and narrow blade. Black Hot wire from breaker box connects to screws that are on same side as narrow blade. Notice also that screws on Hot side of device have a break-away fin. If fin is removed, then add a wire that connects both screws. Each 120volt electric box has only 1 Hot wire that tests 120V to ground wire. Load wire going to light connects to brass screw opposite the switch. White neutral wire connects to silver screw opposite the outlet. Neutral wires are the white wires that are twisted together and covered with wire nut and pushed to back of electric box. If box does not have neutral wires, the outlet will not work. Buy: Combination switch outlet Resources Read about 120Volt circuit |
How
to wire switch outlet combo so switch controls outlet If your switch does not have break-away fin and 2 screws on Hot side, then this wiring is not possible Hot side has the narrow outlet blade. Review instructions above for basic wiring 1) Use screwdriver or pliers to remove break-away fin between Hot side screws. If Hot side does not have break-away fin, then wiring is not possible. 2) Add a jumper wire between brass load screw and outlet screw as shown in diagram Leviton 7299 can not be wired this way Other Leviton models and brands can be wired this way. |

How to replace outlet with combination device: start with ordinary outletProject objective: replace outlet with combo device.Have switch on combo device control outlet on device Ground connection shown. The break-away find bond the dark and brass screws together so they are electrically connected when wire is attached to either screw. If the fin is removed, then the two screws become electrically separated. The silver screws are always bonded together for the Neutral connection, and a break-away fin may or may not be present. Neutral wire must connect
to combo switch. Neutral is normally two or more white wires covered with wire connector and pushed to back of box. If box does not have Neutral wire, the Neutral must be brought from any nearby outlet or ceiling box. Box must have neutral. Hot wire connects to both switch and outlet on left side of switch. Neutral wire connects to Outlet on right side of switch. Load Hot going to light connects to switch on right side of switch. |

When switch is OFF, the pilot is OFF. Black Hot wire from breaker box connects to screws that are on same side as break-away fin. If fin is removed, it is not necessary to add a wire that connects both screws. Each 120volt electric box has only 1 Hot wire that tests 120V to ground wire. Load wire going to light connects to brass screw opposite the switch. White neutral wire connects to silver screw opposite the pilot light. Neutral wires are the white wires that are twisted together and covered with wire nut and pushed to back of electric box. If box does not have neutral wires, the pilot will not work. |
How to test for Hot and Neutral wire: Turn power off Separate all wires for testing except ground wires. Turn power on. Tape tester leads to wood sticks for safety. Keep hands away from power. Test each wire to bare ground wire. Tester lights up on Hot wire. Hot wire should be black (except 3-way switches) Test Hot wire to all other wires except ground Tester lights up on Neutral wire.
