Here's the simple math:
My wife and I use a countdown timer to
control our water heater
> we
spend approximately $18.38 per month to heat hot water.
1.)
We run our ordinary 3500 Watt water
heater a total of 1.25 hours per
day.
> which gives an average of 30 gallons hot
water each day.
2.)
This means we use: 3500 Watts
x 1.25 hours = 4375 Watthours per day = 4.37 Kilowatthours = 4.375 Kwh
per day.
3.)
For an average month: 4.375 Kwh per
day x 30 days = 131.2
Kwh per month.
4.)
For an average month, we pay:
131.2 Kwh x 14¢
per Kwh
= $18.38
Let’s
compare $18.38 to the estimated
cost printed on the
side of our 30 gallon General Electric water heater:
1. The
estimated annual cost for our
GE water heater is $470-540
per year to operate full time.
2.
Assume that GE has given an
accurate estimate.
3.
Divide $470 by 12 months = $39.16
-or-
Divide $540
by 12 months = 45.00
4. If
we run our hot water heater
full time, it will cost
between $39 and $45 per month.
