Overview of 3
phase switch/timer circuit Wire colors vary. 3-phase breaker located in main panel. 3-phase 3-wire goes from breaker to contactor (or motor starter) and then to motor. Grounding is required. Neutral wire is not included, and not needed for 3-phase circuit. 2 Hot wires are pulled from 3-phase lines and go to a double-pole switch or timer. Switch or timer activates motor starter or contactor, which starts motor. 3-pole fused disconnect is added between circuit breaker and contactor or motor starter. This disconnect is often required by code to protect anyone servicing motor and to protect wires and motor from overheating. 2-pole fused disconnect is added between 3-phase line and the double-pole switch or timer. This disconnect is often required by code to protect anyone working on circuit, and to protect wires, switch and contactor Resources Motor resources 3-pole contactors Buy: 3-pole contactors 3-pole disconnect Leviton MS302-DS 600Volt 30 amp double-pole motor switch |
