Ordinary electric water heater that got wet is probably OK.Do not touch water heater that is wet or was wet. Turn off breaker. Remove covers. Let dry out.If insulation is VERY wet it must dry out before service is resumed... otherwise trapped moisture creates problems such as corroded electrical connections at thermostats and elements. Check wiring connection at top... open cover on top of heater. Sponge up water. Let dry out. If the leak has been going on for a while, then take apart electric wires and clean wire ends, and install new twist wire connection. Do not re-use old connections for any electrical application, water heater or elsewhere. Remove covers on side of tank: check bare wires attached to thermostats and elements. Let dry out Check that insulation covering thermostats is not wet... this insulation must be dry or water heater will short out. If insulation over thermostats IS WET, then replace with pink insulation, and let the other insulation dry. Make sure red reset button is pushed in. Make sure the tank is full of water before applying power. Make sure the tank is grounded and wire connections at top are completely dry. Turn breaker fully off and then fully on. If breaker trips, then there is a short circuit. Resource: Water heater is tripping breaker How to troubleshoot electric water heater |
