Water conservation resources
Reasons for saving water
Obviously all human activity requires water, but certain aspects that pertain to water heating and electricity (topics in my website) might be overlooked.
Saving water saves electricity from not pumping water.
Conserving water means a smaller water heater... and less energy consumption.
Dripping hot water side of faucet removes hot from water heater tank that is replaced with cold water that needs to be heated to set point, wasting water and the water needed for electric generation.
Water is essential for generation of all electricity, for example cooling the coal-or-oil-or-gas-or-atomic generator, steam explosion powering the generator, hydroelectric generation.
Some regions (South Texas for example) the rice crop was cancelled several years during the drought so there was enough water for the power plant and towns etc.
PV solar generation does not require water during generation ... but making aluminum frames for solar panels requires smelting aluminum... requiring massive electric generation ... usually from hydroelectric plants in the NW.
Price of water What is water worth?
If you carried each gallon from the river up to 2nd floor bathtub, when would you start to conserve?
Average home uses 1/4 to 1/2 acre-foot water per year.
135,000 gallons = 27,000 5-gallon buckets

If each bath cost $30, would you conserve?
Remember, conserving resources is 'conservative'

Average home with water well pays $12 per year to pump water.

Rain barrel
Larger image
Rain collection system
Set rain barrel higher than 550 gallon storage tank
Storage Tank must be on flat concrete pad.

Use ordinary 55 gallon plastic drum for rain barrel
Use bulkhead fitting to tap into rain barrel/
Install bulkhead fitting 2" higher than tank bottom so debris collects in bottom of rain barrel

Use 1-1/4" PVC water line between rain barrel and tank

Cover top of rain barrel with hardware cloth to protect animals from falling into tank.
Add screen to keep out mosquitoes, and other fine debris.
Use gutter to channel water to rain barrel.

Buy bulkhead fitting:
Bulhead fitting at Amazon
Order 1" bulkhead fitting, and drill 2" hole, for 1" pipe thread
Closed head plastic drum at Amazon
Outdoor water meter for water hose at Amazon
Low pressure water timer Pour bath water into rain barrel
Bathtub uses 20-25 gallons water
Use 5 gallon bucket to empty bathtub and pour into rain barrel
5 gallons x 8.4 lbs per gallon.

I used closed-head 55 gallon barrel... cut hole in top, leaving 1" rim around top to attach hardware cloth and screen.
Re-use water in garden and for grass and trees

Pour in 2 pints hydrogen peroxide occasionally to deodorize
Order 1" bulkhead fitting, and drill 2" hole, uses 1" IP thread

Variable cycle timer instructions
Set frequency... this is the number of times you want to water each week
For example the timer can turn On once each 24 hours or once each 2 hours etc

Then set duration of watering... this is amount of time the water will run ... choose from 1minute to 2 hours

Save water taking shower instead of bath
Bath uses 20+ gallons water and 15 gallons Hot
Shower 10+ gallons water and 5-6 gallons Hot

Resource:

oversized bathtub Avoid oversize bathtub
Uses more water. Uses more hot water.
Requires larger water heater: min 65 gal electric, 50 gal gas
Water temperature has to be hotter so tub water stays hot while filling.
dripping faucet Fix drips and leaks
When hot side faucet drips, then cold water is entering tank at same rate water is dripping out of faucet.

Fuse on power pole No water = No Electricity
Much ot today's electricity is made using steam turbine.
Coal-fired power plants use steam to rotate turbine. Steam comes from boiling water.
Oil and gas fired power plants can also use steam to rotate turbine.
Hydroelectric dams use water to rotate turbine

Solar and wind powered electricity use fewer water resources.
