Troubleshoot
recirculation pump |
There are so many aspects of plumbing ... and so many
aspects of recirculating pumps ... and aspects of having two heaters
... and then blending them in one smooth operating system is not always
clear-cut. Noisy recirculation pump: Install air vent to keep air out of pump impeller Take apart and clean pipes and pump with white vinegar Overheated motor .... feel the motor ... it might be warm but if it's getting hot, then it is on inevitable path to stop working. Broken plastic impeller, sediment build up inside the line, too many elbows, clog somewhere, old galvanized pipe, long distances, bad crossover valve, check valve, sticking check valve air bubbles caused by rotating impeller, crossover ( Crossover ), no air vent added to high point on line, lack of direct return line (when recirculating water returns on cold line instead of dedicated return line) ... all these things factor into troubleshooting a circulating pump ..... and then two or more water heaters would make it harder to troubleshoot |

There
was a fellow who had 2 heaters (front and back of house) that supplied
different parts of house, but some faucets shared a common hot line
from both heaters ... he installed circulating pump on one heater, but
it didn't work ... I suspected because of the common line between
heaters. There might have been other problems like a check valve etc
.... he really needed to map out his plumbing system... I recommended he start by breaking apart the common line, but then some faucets would not have benefit of insta-hot from the pump. So I suggested he install second circulating pump | |
Recirculation
crossover valve Each recirculation system has one-way crossover valve The valve comes as part of recirculation system Take apart and clean with white vinegar Buy: Replacement crossover valve Resource: Water heater recirculation system + troubleshoot |
Air
vent/ Eliminate air
build-up in water line Add air vent to high point on plumbing At high temperatures, gasses are release from water ... release of dissolved gas can create air pockets and air locks in plumbing systems. The spurts of air or gas when opening a hot water faucet can be attributed to the release of dissolved gasses in the water. Eliminate banging pipes caused by air inside line Frequently found with recirculation systems so pump lasts longer, runs quieter Air in water heater... You can take care of air or gas that is generated in the heater when heater is unused for weeks at a time by adding a vent at the top. This is done by installing a "T" in the hot outlet so that the side port on the "T" is facing sideways. Now take your hot water to the house from the side port. At the top port, bush down so you can install a float vent. With hard water, the vent will plug periodically: clean with white vinegar Required with solar installation Buy: Air vent/ Float vent Resource: Air vent .pdf |
