How
to climb on roof I worked as house painter/ remodeler and spent many hours climbing ladders. This information is based on real experience Do use an old rope ladder, old wood ladder, or damaged ladder. |
Check ladder before climbingMust be latched both rungs, on both sides.Check for cracks and bent bolt. Use fender washer on both sides if aluminum has tiny cracks. Bolt is special hardened bolt. Do not replace with regular bolt, must be hardened bolt. Ask at hardware store. Do not use ladder that is bent, or was bent |
Dig ladder feet into soil. Do not set ladder on damp grass without digging the ladder feet deep as possible into the ground. Stand on first rung and use weight of body to bounce the ladder deeper. Or dig a hole in dirt. Set bag of cement mix behind ladder, or have someone stand with feet directly touching back of ladder feet DO NOT EVER CLIMB LADDER THAT IS STANDING ON TILE FLOOR without adding 2x4 bracing across ladder feet that is anchored against a wall or into solid ground
Attach ladder to gutter nail using piece of wire
Move indoors and do not stay on roof, or touch metal ladders, or touch anything made of metal when lightning is within 1 mile or can be heard or seen. |
Set ladder on side of
house to easily climb up to roof and get back down. Best way to get on roof is along the pitched side. Set ladder at angle, as illustrated with wooden ladder (don't use an old wood ladder), so both ladder feet are flat on ground, then set ladder at angle until both rails are flat against roofline. This is counter-intuitive to set ladders this way, but very effective and safe. We also used ropes to secure ladder from falling over, we also made one ladder leg longer on aluminum and wood ladders by adding stout 2x4 or 1x4 yellow pine. When setting ladder against gutter... use wire to tie ladder to gutter nail. Set bag of dirt behind ladder feet. When setting ladder on grass or dirt, turn the feet so they stab into soil. Dig small holes for feet. Choose grass-dirt over concrete surface when setting ladder. Never set extension ladder on wet concrete, or concrete that slopes away from ladder. Sweep surface clean. Never set extension ladder on tile surface without full bracing behind feet. Higher person climbs, less stable ladder. Always make sure 4 points of ladder touch... 2 feet firmly at bottom and 2 rails firmly at top. We take apart extension ladder to make 2 ladders, then chain ladders together to climb down sides of roof. |
Typically,
a single section of ladder is long enough for this type of work. Cut a notch along full length of 2x4 so at least 1/3rd of board fits snug inside the ladder rail. Use 1/2" all-thread bolts that extend through the rung and is securely tightened on both sides with lock nuts and washers. To adjust size, screw another stout 1x4 yellow pipe onto the 2x4. Nail 2x4 blocks into roof to hold the ladder leg from slipping down, and tie a rope near the top of the ladder with 1 man sitting on the roof peak and hold the rope. When finished, add roof tar over nail holes. |

We don't own the land ... we are just borrowing it from earth. \Our diminished land that we are renting from a corporate-owned government over who we have no say .... a body of self emprivleged people who only want the land to churn more money into a coffer by selling us pesticides and cement and weed killers and coal slag... promoting energy stars over developments of 5000 square foot homes without a hint they care how to protect the land ... ignoring the lesser privileged and those on the street who hardly force a strain on the earth with their bare carbon footprint ... instead those people are arrested and vilified ... bombed into submission because they can't pay the bail to defend themselves against the car and consumption that might revolt them to despair... doubt it's true? Then observe how the zoo animals feel, and let it fill you with enough anger to do something that changes what you decide every day. |
