New
workspace Open Photoshop Elements Go to File, New, Blank file, Select 600 x 660 size, RBG, transparent, OK The workspace opens with checkerboard of small gray and white diamonds. |

Menu
bar The menu bar is located at top of workspace. Go to Edit and note Undo. You can use this to reverse any prior action. Go to Edit, Preferences, General, put checkmark in zoom scroll with mouse. Now you can scroll in and out using scroll wheel on mouse |

Layers Go to Windows on the menu bar, and put checkmark next to Layers The layers pane open on right side of workspace. One layer shows. We are going to use two layers. Go to Layer on the menu bar, click new, layer, OK Notice that another layer opens in the Layers pane on right side of workspace. Two layers Now we have two layers Toggle between layers by clicking mouse on either layer. A layer is active when it is highlighted blue. You can only work on one layer at a time. |

Toolbar The toolbar is located on left side of workspace. Hover mouse over each tool to identify function. We are going to use Paint Bucket Tool, Rectangular Marquee toolbar, Move tool, Horizontal Type Tool. Tool options at bottom of workspace.: Each tool has optional settings. Click on a tool. And the options appear at bottom of workspace For example the Type tool has selection of fonts, left align, center, Bold, size, etc. The Marquee tool has rectangle and oval options. Click on each tool to see options at bottom of workspace. |

Color
Picker Color Picker is located on the left-side toolbar at the bottom. The default is Black and White. Toggle between black and white using the little switch arrow located to the right corner. |

Make
black background on layer 1 Click on bottom layer to activate. The work you do will appear on bottom layer but not the top layer. Select Black color from color picker. The default is Black and White, and you can toggle between them using little switch arrow located to the left corner. Select Paint Bucket from toolbar. Click the Paint Bucket in the workspace to fill with black color. The bottom layer is now black. |

Make
white box on layer 2 Click on top layer. Select Rectangular Marquee from toolbar. Use mouse to draw a rectangle. The marquee tool makes a box with dotted lines. We are going to fill this box with white color Select white color from color picker. The default is Black and White, and you can toggle between them using the little switch arrow located to the left corner. Select Paint Bucket from toolbar. Click the Paint Bucket in the box to fill with white color. The top layer is now white. |

Deselect: After you make white box using the Rectangle Marquee tool, go to Select on the menu bar, and click deselect. This deactivates the selection. To make the same rectangle marquee again, put mouse on layer, click and hold mouse while pressing Ctrl key. To move the marquee, use move tool on toolbar. To move the box, use move tool on toolbar. |

Type
the words Select Black color from color picker. Select Horizontal Type Tool from toolbar. At the bottom of the window, choose font style and size. Type words in the box. |

Resize
the box to fit words: After you type words, you can resize box using move tool. Make sure box is deselected, go to select on menu bar, and click deselect. Click on the box, and use points at corners and sides of box to resize. Notice the points on box appear in final picture. |

Use
Mouse to scroll in or out You can make the workspace appear larger on screen using scroll wheel, or use Ctrl+ Ctrl- Adjust the size using scroll wheel. Click the white box to activate the corner and side move points. |

Use
clipping tool to make picture Open clip tool Draw around the image on Photoshop workspace. Save picture. |
