General rules for gfci 1) Only 1 GFCI or AFCI per circuit. More than 1 can lead to tripping. -If there is a GFCI circuit breaker, it can protect without need for GFCI outlet. 2) GFCI circuit breaker protects entire circuit. GFCI outlets can protect that outlet and also be wired to protect downstrream outlets, switches etc. 3) Circuit MUST be grounded and have correct polarity (Black wire to Hot side) -Without proper grounding, a GFCI will delay and not trip instantly, creating potential shock hazard ... but will usually trip before serious injury. 4) Some devices, like power vented water heater specificy no GFCI should be used to ensure proper operation. 5) Testing is only way to ensure GFCI is functioning correctly. Test and reset buttons are provided for testing Testing gfci GFCI usually fail in OFF position, but for absolute safety, ''due to complexity of GFCI, it is necessary to test the device on a regular basis. -For permanently wired devices, a monthly test is recommended. -Portable type GFCI's should be tested each time before use. GFCI's have a built-in test circuit which imposes artificial ground fault on the load circuit to assure that the ground-fault protection is still functioning." |

GFCI nightlight has same polarity as other GFCI and AFCI outlets, and same as ordinary non-GFCI outlets. Correct wiring to match polarity is required. |
Polarity
and grounding Wires should always connect to correct side of outlet. Wide blade is Neutral. Narrow blade is Hot. Many appliances and TVs have polarized plug. This is so Hot and Neutral can work correctly with electronics inside device. If outlet is wired incorrectly, then appliances and timers, GFCI's etc don't work as expected. GFCI outlet is different than ordinary outlet Hot side has narrow blade/ Neutral side has wide blade = same as ordinary outlet There is no break-away fin because all 4 screws on GFCI are independent of each other There are two set of screws on GFCI outlet, same as ordinary outlet. Except each screw is independent and not connected by metal. So all 4 GFCI screws are independent. Back of GFCI device identifies Line screws and Load screws. Load screws are usually covered with yellow tape when device is fresh out of box. Hot and Neutral wires from breaker box attach to Line screws, as illustrated. At this point, anything plugged into the GFCI outlet is protected from fault. Both outlets are GFCI protected at this point, and Load screws are not used 1) Load screws are usually covered with yellow tape when device is purchased. This indicates that GFCI is wired differently than ordinary outlet. 2) If you want more outlets and switches protected by same GFCI, then attach wires to Load screws, as illustrate below. 3) If you do NOT want GFCI protection on subsequent outlets and switches, then attach wires to Line screws, as illustrated below.
