Electrical tools must be insulated.
Always best to disconnect power, but insulation failure, lack of proper grounding, grounded neutral, lack of GFCI, out-of-code wiring, generator operating without transfer switch, and other problems still pose a risk to anyone working on electric power ... even when breaker is off.

cadet heater watt volt amp chartExample cadet heater watt, volt amp chart
Basic formula: volts x amps = watts (power).
For new installation, add up all loads on the circuit.
A load is any device that consumes electric power, such as light, fan, shoe buffer, radio etc.
Each load has a watt rating on the label that shows amount of power it consumes. Add up total watt usage on circuit and divide by volts to figure amp consumption on the breaker ... a 20 amp 120 volt breaker has a safe max of 20 x 80% = 16 amps.
If the 20 amp 120 volt circuit is using 840 watts, then divide that by 120 volt to yield 7 amp consumption.
If your 120 volt circuit consumes 7 amps, and you add 1000 watt, 8 amp cadet heater, then that is a total of 16 watts, and perfectly fine. You cannot add the 1500 watt 12.5 amp heater. FYI, the 1500 watt heater requires a dedicated breaker that serves no other loads. Read about dedicated circuit breaker
Going over the 80% safe max of 16 amps, up to 20 amps on a 20 amp breaker is ok if the circuit does not remain above the 16 amp safe max all the time, or continuously. Remember, all loads on the circuit are normally not running at one time, and some loads can be turned off to free up amp capacity on the circuit.

Match wire and breaker
Override cadet with timer Override 240 volt wall heater with timer or switch
Cadet heater uses 8.3 amps
Suggest using 20 amp breaker and 12 gauge wire
Use timer or switch that is rated for at least 15 amps.
20 amp switch or timer is best.
Mechanical spring-wound timer or on-off switch is rated 20 amp is best recommendation

DO NOT BYPASS THERMOSTAT ON CADET
Cadet thermostat has overheat protection to prevent run-away heating

240 volt circuit can be turned on-off using only one wire. Not necessary to turn off both Hot wires with 240 volt.

Override bathroom heaterWiring for Spring-wound timer
Suggest spring-wound timer for simple wiring.
No neutral wire needed, works with 120V or 240V
Use same wiring diagram for either 120V or 240V volt.
If wiring for 120V, then the Black wire is Hot and there will be no red wire

Safe maximum for 20 amp breaker and 12 gauge wire is 20 x 80% = 16 amps (for continuously operating loads)

Wiring tips for all diagrams
Access to the thermostat is possible, but wiring space is limited.
Use twist on wire connectors ... always best choice for wire connections. Never use tape or solder to make connections for any type residential wiring.
Must use 600 volt solid copper wire. Stranded wire is not best choice for connecting to screw terminals on timer ... can come loose and cause arc and failure. Use a short piece of solid copper and connect to stranded wire using twist on connector.
Connectors must cover all copper wire, and be secure so they cannot fall off. The heat produced by wall heater can cause deterioration of wires and wire connectors over time.
Make sure all connections are inside a covered enclosure that is rated for electrical wiring (not homemade boxes, enclosures etc).

Battery-operated: No neutral wire needed.
Works with 120V or 240V.
Use same wiring diagram for either 120V or 240V volt.
Up to 16 amps resistance load (heat element is resistance load).
Calculations
120 volts x 16 amp timer = maximum 1920 watt heater
safer maximum would be 1000-1200 watt
240 volt x 16 amp timer = maximum 3840 watt heater
safer max would be 2500-3000 watt

8 amps x 120 volt = 1600 watt
15 amps x 240 volt = 1800 amp
These amp ratings are a bit light for controlling 120 volt 8.3 amp and 17 amp 240 volt wall heater without using relay.
