Copper ground wire. Every device, load, metal enclosure etc must be grounded. Ground wire must be continuous throughout installation, never switched on-off, never used as a Neutral wire. Generally ... use same size as other wire in circuit Buy: 12 gauge copper ground wire Ground wire Green ground wire Ground pigtails Ground rods/ ground clamps at Amazon |
Non metallic flexible cables must carry ground wire, but do not have hazard of short circuit causing injury from shock. Armored steel cable can be used as a grounded connection, and will protect wires from damage. Metal can be energized from an insulation failure. All conduit ...metal, plastic ... flexible and rigid ... must be attached to structure, and attached to enclosures, boxes. Movement, damage and deterioration are major cause of electrical failure. Electrical tools must be insulated. Always best to disconnect power, but insulation failure, lack of proper grounding, grounded neutral, lack of GFCI, out-of-code wiring, generator operating without transfer switch, and other problems still pose a risk to anyone working on electric power ... even when breaker is off. T104 timers for filter and cleaner Supply voltage is 240 volts that connects to Terminals 1 and 2 on Filter timer. Both timers have a clock motor that rotates the yellow dial once per day. The dial can have up to 12 sets of trippers for 12 ON-Off periods each day. Both clock motors are connected to terminals 1 and 2 on the Filter timer. The terminals on Cleaner timer receive no voltage unless the Filter timer is ON. This assures that pool cleaner can only run when the filter pump is ON. Filter pump must be ON so debris from the pool can be run through the sand filter. Fig 2 is same as Fig 1 shown above. Note that both the Filter Pump and Cleaner must be same voltage, either 120V or 240V. Timer clock voltage must match the Pump and Cleaner. The clock motors can be changed to either voltage Buy: 240 volt clock motor 120 volt clock motor Both clock motors must connect to terminals 1 and 3 on Filter Pump timer. The pool cleaner never operates unless the filter pump is running. The wiring is designed for that purpose, so that the debris picked up by cleaner gets sent through the sand filter. |
Each timer on different breaker/
2 circuit breakers Illustration shows a method for running the filter pump and cleaner on separate circuit breakers. This came from an email question from a fellow who was experiencing overload on 1 circuit breaker, and wanted to install second breaker to run the cleaner. The contactor turns ON when filter timer is ON. The contactor closes circuit so cleaner timer receives power. When cleaner turns ON, it is powered from the second circuit breaker. T10101R 120 volt wiring This control center has same function as T10404R except for 120 volt installations. 240 volt motors run more efficiently than 120V. Most motors can be wired for either voltage. Look at rating plate on motor to select correct control center, wire size and breaker. Troubleshoot
T10404 and T10101R -Flip circuit breaker fully off and then back on. -Check that both clock motors are connected to terminals 1 and 2 on the Filter timer. -Observe if both clock dials are rotating 1 revolution per day. If dials are not rotating, then clock motor is bad, unit is not getting voltage, or is getting incorrect voltage. -Convert timer to either 120 Volt or 240 volt by changing clock motor Buy: 240 volt clock motor for T10404R 120 volt clock motor for T10101R -Check if each clock dial has ON and OFF trippers fastened to yellow dial. -Move both override levers to ON position. If Filter pump is OFF and Cleaner pump is OFF, then move both override levers to ON position. If Filter pump works and Cleaner pump works, then voltage is correct and wiring is correct. -If all the above steps function correctly, observe if the trippers push the override lever back and forth between ON position and OFF position. If the dial rotates tripper past the override lever, and override lever does not change position, then most likely problem is worn trippers need to be replaced. Buy: trippers 156T1978A set 2 156T1978A trippers PA115 - 25 sets< -If the trippers are sliding past the override lever, and new trippers do not solve problem, then replace timer module. Buy: T101M 120 volt mechanism only T104M 240 volt mechanism - Undersized wire and breaker can cause malfunctions. - Check that motor load is working correctly. Look at rating plate on motor for voltage and amperage requirements. - Convert control center timers to either 120 Volt or 240 volt by changing clock motor Buy: 240 volt clock motor for T10404R 120 volt clock motor for T10101R -If the above steps check OK, then check terminal connections and wires. Max 2 wires under a terminals. Do not use stranded wire. Clean corroded wires with sandpaper, or use white vinegar to help dissolve build-up on terminals. Tighten screws very tight against copper wire. Use only copper wire. |

practice for boxes/ enclosures For household 120-240 volt power: -Use only approved 600 volt cables, wires, enclosures, boxes, conduit etc for household 120-240 volt. -Extension cords are not rated 600 volt, and cannot be used for permanent in-wall wiring. Resources Extension cord code -Do not use makeshift, homemade boxes that are not rated for household voltage. -Correct box must be used for application ... a light fixture or fan requires round or octagon box ... cannot use switch box, or square junction box for light fixture ... cannot use round, octagon, or square junction box for switch and outlet. -All enclosures and boxes require a cover that is made to fit box, and must sit flat and tight against box. -Missing knockout holes must be filled. -Keep enclosure door or cover in place and closed to contain spark and potential fire hazard. -Box cannot have vent holes or heat fan installed where air supply can feed a potential fire. -Never solder household wiring connections. High heat from resistance, caused when amperage gets pushed through the wire by voltage, will melt solder and cause potential hazard. -Use only approved 600 volt wire connectors. Never reuse old wire connectors. -All enclosures, wiring, conduit etc must be attached firmly to structure, and located so cannot be damaged by lawn equipment etc. and best if located away from high heat, exposure to sun. Heat will cause deterioration of electrical installations. -Enclosures require ground wire to be present and connected to all devices, equipment etc. Metal boxes and enclosures require connection to ground wire. Plastic boxes do not require grounding. Resources: Safe electric wiring/ for boxes and enclosures Color code for wire Low-voltage structural wiring (doorbell, communication, TV etc): -Never include low-voltage 'structural wiring' inside same enclosure, conduit, raceway or box as household voltage. -Low voltage structural wiring and household wiring must be electrically separated to prevent insulation failure from energizing low voltage wires, cause fire and safety hazard. -Structural wiring can be run inside walls, does not require enclosure, box conduit etc except for installation convenience, weatherproofing, reliability, organization, access to splices and connections etc. -Household 120-240 volt wiring cannot be soldered ... but low-volt structural wires can be soldered when needed.
