to make a freeze outlet How to wire a freeze outlet |
Use only 600 volt wire. Lamp cord, extension cords are not rated 600 volt. Use copper wire only. Aluminum wire is fire risk and should be avoided or installed by professional. 30 amp breaker use 10 gauge / 120-240 volt 30 amp outlet can be installed on 30 amp breaker only/ use 10 gauge wire ... cannot be connected to 15-20-40 amp breaker. Orange/ #10 gauge wire, with ground ... 30 amp capacity. Safe maximum: 30 x 80% = 24 amps. Buy: 10-2 gauge/ 30 amp 10-3/ 30 amp Southwire electric tools |

Safety when testing wires: Never touch wet or previously flooded appliance. Never stand on wet surface when working on electric. Never stand on bare soil, put down dry boards. Tape tester leads to wood sticks to keep hands away from power. Use non-contact voltage tester before touching wires. Never touch or lean into any made of metal. Remove metal objects from pockets. Do not use oxygen or fuel accelerants in same room as electrical repairs Resource: Basic house wiring |

120 volt Freeze outlet Fig-1 show a bi-metal thermostat connected to 120 volt outlet. This particular thermostat switches ON when temperature drops below 35°F and automatically resets to OFF when temperature rises above 45°F. So the freeze outlet would turn on when temps drop below 35°F. And turn off when temps rise above 45°F. Note: mechanical bi-metal thermostats are approximate. Thermostat rating 15 amp, means no more than 12 amps, so if circuit controls 1 HP pump, or a heavy 30-40 amp circuit, or 240 volt application, then use freeze thermostat to activate a contactor (illustrated lower on this page). Buy: Freeze thermostat To wire freeze thermostat requires crimp on terminals ... that work with stranded wire ... but not solid copper. Outlets, switches etc used for ordinary household wiring require solid copper wire because stranded can come loose under screw terminals. To solve problem, join solid wire and stranded together using twist-on wire connector. Wrap longer length of stranded around the solid wire, then apply connector. See image To wire outlet so that one outlet is controlled by freeze thermostat, and other outlet has power at all times, then connect freeze thermostat as shown in Fig-1 above, and be sure to remove break-away fin (Fig-2) located between both brass (or black) screws. White Neutral wire connects to silver screw. Ground wire must connect to green ground screw. All outlets, switches, timers, etc must be grounded. Box and safety considerations: Install outlet and freeze thermostat inside deep box or double box ... this will give space for wiring and thermostat. Use only electrically-rated box, not homemade box. Install matching cover. So if box is rectangular, the use a cover to match, not a round cover etc. Box must be attached firmly to structure. Metal boxes must be grounded. Plastic boxes do not require ground connection. AVOID construction grade outlets if you want break-away fin. If both outlets are going to be freeze-protected, then no need to remove break-away fin. Since
freeze
outlet is located outdoors, the circuit must be GFCI
protected. 1) The GFCI can be located outdoors ... convert GFCI to freeze outlet. 2) The GFCI or any outlet can be located inside the home on exterior wall ... drill through back of box and drill through wall to run new wire to outdoor box with freeze outlet. 3) The GFCI for outdoor outlets can be located in kitchen or bathroom ... add freeze outle outside. 4) The GFCI can be a circuit breaker ... a GFCI circuit breaker will protect all boxes on circuit including freeze outlet. 5) Use portable GFCI to plug into outlet if circuit has no GFCI protection. -Generally there cannot be more than 1 GFCI on a circuit or GFCI can trip off for no reason. -The ground wire MUST be properly connected so GFCI performs as expected, and ensures protection. 1) Convert outdoor GFCI to freeze
outlet This ONLY works if GFCI is located outdoor and exposed to freezing temperature. Add extension ring to box if not enough space. Buy: Electric box extension 1/2 Electric box extension Weatherproof Extension Adapter Carlon FSE box Weatherproof outlet box Here the freeze thermostat is wired directly to GFCI outlet and the freeze thermostat is connected to the line screw on the hot side as shown in illustration. The GFCI outlet does NOT have a break-away fin for separate wiring on each outlet ... so both outlets are freeze-protected, and both outlets are GFCI protected. Buy: Freeze thermostat GFCI receptacles Terminals Twist on wire connectors |
Add extension ring to box if not
enough space for freeze thermostat Buy: Electric box extension 1/2 Electric box extension Weatherproof Extension Adapter Carlon FSE box Weatherproof outlet box While in use outdoor box cover 2) The GFCI can be located inside the home on exterior wall ... drill through back of box and drill through wall to run new wire to outdoor box with freeze outlet. |
3) GFCI for outdoor outlets can
be located in kitchen or bathroom Kichen GFCI is connected to downstream outlets that are located on front and back porch. In this case, the downstrean outlets are GFCI protected because they are connected to Load screws on the GFCI. To convert a single outlet to a freeze outlet, then wire as shown, including the removal of break-away fin. The other outlets are live at all times ... only the bottom outlet is freeze. Ground wire is required for GFCI to fully protect. Use 3-prong cords for any outdoor application. Test GFCI before connecting electrical cords, using tools etc outdoors. Buy: Freeze thermostat GFCI receptacles Terminals Electric box extension 1/2 Electric box extension Weatherproof Extension Adapter |
3) The GFCI can be a circuit breaker A GFCI circuit breaker will protect all boxes on circuit including freeze outlet. Buy GFCI circuit breaker |
Applications for freeze outlet Here in Houston, I have 2 freeze outlets so I can cover my outdoor faucets with heating pads. The pads turn on automatically when temperature drops below 40°F and then turn off when temperature rises. In the wellhouse, I have a freeze outlet that turns on several incandescent bulbs to prevent water tank from freezing. If you have above ground swimming pool that is connected via a plug-in motor, you can use a freeze outlet to automatically turn on pump in winter months ... running the pump prevents pipes and water from freezing. You can use the little freeze button to replace more expensive freeze component found on ordinary pool equipment *(shown below) |
GFCI Basics Code: 120 volt 15 amp devices including GFCI (shown on left), timers, switches, receptacles, wifi controls etc can be installed on 15 or 20 amp breaker. 120 volt 20 amp GFCI (shown to right), timers, receptacles etc can be installed on 20 amp breaker only, but NOT on 15 amp breaker. Buy 15 amp GFCI 20 amp GFCI Caution: just 1 GFCI per circuit to ensure correct function. Multiple GFCI on same circuit can cause frequent resets and failures. More detail For permanently wired GFCI (breakers and outlets), a monthly test is recommended. Press test button on GFCI to simulate fault condition. Reset ensures the device is functioning. All GFCI must be grounded with ground wire. **Portable type GFCI's (used for temporary swimming pools, onsite extension cords etc) should be tested each time before use.
