Replace heating element on 240V water heater

> This specific heater has a number of challenges  1. The heater is located in the attic
2. The heater drain is clogged with sediment
3. There are two heater elements and both will be tested for continuity to see if one or both are bad
4. Heater elements are difficult to remove and may need to be drilled
5. After the element is removed, the sediment will be vacuumed out of the water tank using a wet-dry vac
6. Last, the new element is installed and the project is completed

Assemble tools
> Light for attic + respirator mask
> Water heater element wrench
> Big vacuum cleaner + Duct tape or regular tape + plastic tube to fit inside tank
> Wrenches: Pipe wrench + Small crescent wrench + pliers
> Water hose
> Washing machine hose [with two female ends]
> Hammer
> Drill + 9/32 bit + extension cord
> ¼” tap + handle
> 220V electrical tester
> Continuity tester [or 2 wires and a 9 or 6 volt battery]
>Flat tip and Phillips screwdrivers

Turn off the 220V breaker
Leave the water turned-on so the pressure can help clear blockage in the heater drain

and has to be drained to the outside without dripping inside house > for best drainage, use short hose

Tools needed: a washing machine hose with two female ends > one end connects to the water heater and the other end connects to the drain hose
> to loosen sediment, connect hose between outdoor water  spigot and heater drain > turn on hot water spigot inside house > turn on outdoor spigot to flush back into  water heater > afterwards, turn off water going into water heater
