Gene Haynes Artist Biography
Artist Biography: Self-taught from an early age, my work records
movement, color and change observed in life. Colors themselves motivate
me into using ever-changing methods that push boundaries for color and
catch the eye. The work is balanced in content, while maintaining
emotional activity that portray change, like a fire on the savannah, or
show ideas and cultures layered over the past. The standard used to
gauge my work is: does it look different & interesting? Is it
new? Does it push beyond what came before? Does the image become
greater than the sum of it’s parts? My aspiration has been to produce
professional grade work that is unique and inimitable.
Medium: Acrylic paint, wood, plastic, paper, etc applied to primed,
sanded & painted ½” birch plywood.
Process: Clear paint is applied in various ways to plywood while laid
flat, then color and objects are added while wet… generally the work is
done at night so drying time is extended… once dry, objects are
introduced or removed from the surface, many times using a veneer cut
from older pieces to overlay newer work. Once a piece is finished, a
thin poplar trim is nailed to the 4 edges, making a durable frame that
is filled, sanded and lightly varnished to stabilize the grain.
Production: The plywood and poplar basics are purchased at Hardwood
Lumber in Houston. All work from start to finish is done by Gene Haynes
in a covered, open-air studio with a concrete floor that measures 18’ x
36’. The studio was built by me in 1992 and is located on my property
in Rosenberg. Artwork is stored in a 10’ x 12’ room in my home with
shelves built specifically to hold the work & elevate it from
the off-chance of interior flooding.
